A Baby Quilt With Japanese Touch

Our friends recently welcomed their first grandchild! It's a boy--James. We're so happy for them. Fortunately I had a spare baby boy quilt that I had made last year that I could share with the new parents.

The pattern is Urban Abacus, using the Quick Curve Ruler, with some simplification to the original pattern.

The backing is traditional Japanese kakebuton fabric, purchased when we lived in Japan. Kakebuton fabric comes in many unique designs, and is used to make a thick comforter used in all Japanese homes.

It is 100% cotton and has a sateen finish, for a silky feel. James has some Japanese blood, so I thought it would be fun to give him this quilt with a bit of Japan in it.

Welcome to this wonderful world, James!

Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  1. Nancy, how special you used your Japanese fabric for the backing! The appliqued heart is a special touch! The white background really showcases the prints making it great eye spy quilt too!

  4. Your thumbnail photo caught my eye in the Whoop Whoop Friday linky as I'm just finishing the Runner tablerunner using the Quick Curve Ruler. Your quilt has a lovely combination of colours and patterns, I hope it becomes a much loved part of this new little family it is being gifted to.

  6. Lovely quilt! I have a Quick Curve Ruler still in its package so it was nice to see a finished quilt so I could see it's potential and maybe it will come out of that packaging.

  9. That Japanese fabric is a beautiful touch; it's like two quilts in one! Lucky baby! I have the QCR but only used it once to make a mini. This makes me want to get out the ruler and makes something bigger!
