Ruby Tsunami 🌊

This year is the 40th anniversary of Minnesota Quilters. The traditional 40th anniversary gift is ruby. My small group decided to commemorate the event by each of us making a red and white quilt to be entered in the special exhibit category of the Minnesota Quilters quilt show in St. Cloud on June 14-16. I was happy when I finished the last stitch on Wednesday!

This quilt started about a year ago as this pile of 9-patches:

When January rolled around this year I thought I better get to work and make this happen! Next came the string pieces:

The pattern is Talkin' Turkey by Bonnie Hunter. Blocks done ✅.
Sashing put together:
Flying geese, many flying geese!
More string pieces and more flying geese!
At last to the quilting! This edge-to-edge is called "Lovegrass".
The backing is an extra-wide Grunge that I was thrilled to buy at half price!
And my finished quilt! I named it "Ruby Tsunami": ruby for red, the color for the 40th anniversary, and tsunami for the giant wave of scraps represented in this quilt.
The gallery card will read: "This quilt is a scrapbook of my 38 years of quilting: old & new, traditional & modern, American & Japanese fabrics."

Grace & peace!!! ~Nancy

  1. Your quilt is exquisite! I have the BH book it is in, but wasn't particularly fond of it. Red is not my favorite color, but your quilt is going to make me take a second look at the pattern. Coincidentally, this is Washington State Quilter's 40th also, and our show is called "Ruby Jubilee". We are also having a special red and white category, if you would like to display your quilt at our show in Oct.

  10. Oh Nancy, this is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I'm kind of biased though since red is my favorite color. Even if it wasn't, I'd still be saying the same thing. It is beautiful.

  25. Breathtakingly beautiful. I love all of Bonnie Hunter's designs but they seem so intimidating with lots of little pieces, sashing, corner stones and pieced borders. I believe that your studio must have looked like a red and white whirlwind of fabrics. Ruby Tsunami is a perfect name!!!
