Dreami Projects + Road Trip Day 4

Are you familiar with Dreami projects? "Dreami" stands for:

DRop Everything And Make It

I'm sure everyone experiences these moments in their life, whether it be a craft, cooking, reading, or just about anything. In quiltland it means we run across a pattern, idea or fabric, and we stop whatever project we're working on to make it now! I have 2 "Dreami" projects to share with you this month.

I fell in love with this Joyful Barn Star quilt pattern. I sewed the top one day and quilted it the next:

It resembles a barn quilt but it's made out of fabric:

The pattern finishes at 36". I resized mine to 24" square so it can hang on our front door:
I used summer fabrics--boats, fish, anchors. I just might want to make one for each of the four seasons!

The quilting is one of my favorite modern designs, "Egg Carton".
Grunge fabric on the back:
My second Dreami project this month is this Diana quilt. The pattern is by Gudrun Erla. Check out her video, plus free pattern.

I quilted it with "White Caps", a wave design:

This quilt came about when a call went out for quilts to give to foster children at camp. Gudrun came out with her free pattern about the same time, so this Dreami project came to be, five days from start to finish.

This great backing is from IKEA, and is conveniently 60" wide. I bought it packaged in a 118" length cut, about a year ago:

This pattern is layer cake friendly, although I cut mine from stash. Some of the fabrics in my two Dreami projects are from the same line/grouping. I did add a number of other fabrics from my stash to this second Dreami project:

Sandra, who blogs over at mmmquilts!, has a "Dreami" link party on the last Saturday of every month, where I'll be linking up.

Plus, here is Day 4 of our road trip to California; video produced by our DD2:

  1. Oh, that barn star quilt is so pretty! How do you hang it on your door? I love the other quilt too, with all those bright, happy colors!

    1. Good question, Wendy! I have a hanging tube on the back and am using a "Hang-It Dang-It". The previous owners put a nail in the front door, painted the color of the door. The nail is too big for the Hang It Dang It hanger hole, so I put a rubber band through the hole using a lark's head knot. The other end of the rubber band goes over the nail.

  2. That door barn quilt is adoable and perfect. I can so see wanting to do one for each season. I am now thinking of one for our aparment door, and yes, the “hang it dang it” is perfect. Now to see what my door is made of.....

  3. I can see why you dropped everything to make the barn quilt! It looks so good on your door. What a great idea and a perfect way to display it for everyone to enjoy!

  4. Yes, barn quilts suited to the seasons are PERFECT for a quilter's front door. I adore your Joyful Barn Star Quilt, and the Egg Carton pattern is gorgeous on it. So I see that you quilt on an APQS Freedom... I bought a dealer's demo Millenium last year and was astounded to discover how hard it is for me to just "trace along the line" of a paper pantograph with the longarm machine! How long did it take you to get so good at that? Any tips or tricks for a newbie like me? I know now that some of the pantograph patterns I chose initially were not very beginner friendly. :=)

  5. I know all about DREAMi projects, except I call mine queue jumpers! I usually have a few that I'm working on that jumped to the front w/o any warning. Your "barn quilt" is so pretty, and I love that you used a suction cup to adhere it to the door, how clever!

  9. Nancy I love the Barn Star. The fabrics fit the pattern so well. Hang it Dang it is new to me, so I am off to investigate them.

  10. Oh Dreami! I love it - now I have a label for something I do ALL the time (and so my housework and school work suffers, but I'm in my happy place when busting out a project from start to finish!) I love your wallhanging - the colour combo is what caught my eye in the linky thumbnails, it is so gorgeous!

  11. Your barn quilt looks super on your door. So festive and fun! And the Diana pattern is a really nice variation of a rail fence. That variation in the width of the strips makes it more sophisticated. Thanks for the pattern link!

  12. Love the pop of color that the barn quilt adds to your home! I'm sure the Diana quilt is loved by the foster child who received it. It's so cheerful. How could your not love it! Fun vacation video. Love the upbeat background music!

  13. Lovely projects. I love that you have a glass door so you can hang a quilt and have it on display and protected from the elements. And great score on the IKEA fabric. Thank you for linking up to TGIFF.

  14. Terrific idea for the front door! I'm badly wanting to make one for ours, but we face west and so it gets a TON of sun. I've never heard of Hang it Dang it, so will check them out! You have two PERFECT DrEAMi! projects, like 2 days and 5?! Fabulous! Love that they share some of the same fabrics but have a totally different vibe. Thank you so much for linking up - oh yes, that IKEA fabric is perfection.

  16. Both quilts are lovely and you made great time on them! You even created a sort of barn door out of your own door! Your quilt looks so warm and welcoming!
