Gudrun recently did a one day virtual Stripology Retreat, with 2 sessions to choose from. I did the first session, on Saturday, October 18th!
The virtual retreat was held on zoom. Quilters from 48 US states and 8 countries around the world participated. There were 250+ quilters signed in at each of the two sessions, making a total of more than 500 quilters for both sessions combined, plus some quilters participated as a group from quilt shops.
There were 12 different fabric bundles to choose from. My sister, our cousin, and my friend also did the retreat. Three of the 4 of us chose the same bundle, Simply Cozy by Zen Chic!!! ⤵️ We have similar tastes in fabrics!!!Here's the cute box everything came in.⤵️Besides 12 fat quarters, background fabric, two border fabrics and binding fabric, totaling more than 7 yards, we had the following goodies in our retreat box!!!⤵️ We virtually traveled to three cities in France during the retreat, therefore the Madeleine cake, beret and France sticker, as well as GE giant malted milk balls, fabric clips, ruler stickers, a bingo card and a retreat booklet with schedule, recipes and info on France.
I was able to finish 16 blocks on the day of the retreat, ⤵️ and got quite a ways along on the rest of the 32 blocks. Below is the original layout of the two different blocks.
I went with an alternative layout, separating the 2 blocks.⤵️
My Quilt Info:
Pattern: Margot from GE Designs
Fabrics: Simply Cozy by Zen Chic for Moda Fabrics
Size: 59" x 74"
Batting: Quilters Dream 80/20
Thread: Glide--Mango
MollyLovelyThreads on Instagram recently had a reel on where she said, "Do you want your quilt to look modern and unique? Then choose a quilting design that is hard to describe, with a shape you don't quite have the words for." I think this quilting design, called "Dreaming",⤵️ fits that bill!
The binding that came with the kit was more of the navy Grunge from the border. I like switching up kits a bit so my quilt doesn't look 100% like everyone else's, so I changed to this Tula Pink stripe for the binding.Oh my, this backing! It's half of a duvet cover from IKEA, queen size. Don't you love their large graphic designs?!!
The big picture of the backing! ⤴️
Now, here's where Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, comes in. My DH has been in and out of the hospital 6 times since May, due to heart failure. He just finished going through heart transplant evaluation at Mayo, which included 35 appointments!
We brought my Margot quilt along and took some photos. This first one is taken on the 19th floor of the Gonda Building. You can see the Plummer Building off to the right. It was the tallest building in Rochester until they built the Gonda Building.
The next photo is also taken from the 19th floor of the Gonda Building, which is 21 floors tall. In the background is the Broadway Plaza,⤵️ which is 29 stories tall and is the current tallest building in Rochester.
Mayo planned to add 11 floors to the Gonda building, making it 32 floors and once again the tallest building in Rochester, but that was put on hold indefinitely due to the pandemic!
When we were down to the last 2 appointments, Mr G&P's defibrillator shocked him 3x in short order and we ended up with a trip to the ER, ICU and then one of the cardiac floors, where they finished up the appointments.
We are back home now. Mr. G&P is accepted into the heart transplant program. He is a Level 4, which means he's stable enough to wait at home. The wait could be up to a year, during which time we can't travel more than 4 hours from Mayo Clinic in case a heart becomes available. BTW, we live 80 minutes from Mayo. While we wait, I'll be quilting. And praying.Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

Will be praying for your husband and you during this time
ReplyDeleteThank you, Pam. We appreciate your prayers.
DeleteI love your quilt! How pretty it looks hanging in that beautiful building. The goodie box is outstanding, love the malted milk balls. I like that quilting panto, reminds me of stippling but prettier.
ReplyDeleteI will pray for Mr G&P as well as for you. That is scary about the defib going off. How fortunate he was to be in that particular place. I pray much success with his future procedure!
My husband has CHF and is a stage 3. He has had a defib device since 2012 and is due for a new one next year. His ejection fraction is very low. This year he got a barostim implant that has actually helped give him more energy. He has improved from sitting on the couch to now walking 5 miles about 4x weekly. I am grateful for every day with him.
You and your hubby are in my thoughts, after all those tests I am glad he made the list. Your quilt shined brightly taking photos while at the clinic!! I assume there will be more of this design for you to quilt;)
ReplyDeleteYour quilt looks like a fabulous piece of modern art in that building!! I love it! Sending lots of prayers for all of you Nancy. (Missy V.)
ReplyDeleteMy prayers for you and your hubby during this stressful season of life. That is a beautiful quilt and a great pattern and different style of fabric for Zen Chic heh?? I’m glad that you have quilting to keep your mind busy. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Your prayers are greatly appreciated. I like everything Zen Chic designs! Yes, quilting and sewing is a great comfort.
DeleteOh Nancy, I am sorry that your hubby is going through that, and you, too. Sending out prayers and good thoughts for you both. Way to make lemonade out of lemons with your quilt photography while visiting the Mayo! Margot is a beautiful quilt! It was so interesting to see those blocks up close and then see what they do when sewn together. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI'm adding you and your hubby to my prayer list. May there be a heart available for him soon and he will have a quick and full recovery. Your Margot quilt is beautiful. I love the Tula binding!! That was a really nice kit.
ReplyDeletePraying for you and your husband. I really ike the way you laid out your quilt. It looks great!
ReplyDeleteThank you for praying--we appreciate it. The alternative quilt layout was thought up by another retreater. A lot of us admired her quilt and copied her idea. I like it better this way, also. In the original layout, at first glance, I didn't notice that there are actually 2 different blocks.
DeleteOh Nancy, my heart goes out to you and my prayers too. I love your Margot quilt so much and hope it provided you some comfort during all those appointments. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

I will keep your husband and you in my prayers. Your quilt looks amazing, Nancy. The backing fabric is so fun. Take care. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt looks amazing and I love seeing it hanging around in all different parts of the hospital. Fascinating information about the hospital, too.
ReplyDeleteI am very pleased the tests are complete. Now comes the waiting game. I am sure you have plenty to keep you busy. All the best.
Continued prayers on your behalf. Your retreat quilt is lovely. I prefer your layout to the first version also. You get SO MUCH DONE !
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kat. We appreciate your prayers. As for getting quilts done, it helps to own a longarm!
DeleteZen Chic fabrics are so fun, and had to smile that you all chose those fabrics! Your quilt looks fantastic, and what a great idea to bring it along for a photo shoot. I'm continuing to pray for you and your hubs - hope the wait is not too long!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is fantastic, and it sounds like it was fun, too! I love the way the negative space plays between the interior and border blocks.
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely pretty! I love the colours of the quilt... and the design is very unique. Tq for taking us around Gonda's building too
ReplyDeleteI so sorry to hear about your husband's heart issues, but so glad he is now on the transplant list. Those retreats sound wonderful, and the kit was obviously full of fun. I like your layout of the blocks even better than the original. Beautiful quilt.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that your husband has been accepted onto the transplant list and hope one becomes available for him way sooner than a year. I saw the announcement for the GE Designs retreat and was sooo tempted but these last few months have been so busy I just knew I had to resist. After doing Gudrun's SALs during the pandemic, I would love to do one of her virtuals. Her patterns give the Stripology ruler a real workout! Great "Margo" and while I've heard great things about using IKEA sheets for backings, hadn't considered the duvet covers. That one is stunning!
ReplyDeleteGreat way to make a little fun from a stressful time going through all the testing. My heart goes out to you.
ReplyDeleteOh Nancy, I'm so sorry and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your husband gets the transplant as soon as possible. Your lovely quilt is definitely a ray of sunshine and will brighten up your days to come. I love your version and the beautiful fabric bundle you choose. Lovely Dreaming quilting too. How fun to have French goodies in the box, I hope that you enjoyed the Madeleine cake ;) Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous quilt and linking up. Big and warm hugs.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful and looked stunning in those settings. I'm very sad to hear about the troubles your hubby has been having. He is so fortunate to have his steadfast partner by his side supporting him throughout this ordeal. I'm also hoping the wait will be short for the sake of both of you. How fortunate we are, though, to live in modern times where such a treatment is an option. Strength and calm to you both as you wait.
ReplyDeleteYour Margo quilt is absolutely stunning. I’m encouraged to hear Mr. G&P has been accepted for a heart transplant. But understand the worry. I can’t even imagine the stress involved with so many times in and out of the hospital. Our last 6 months seem trivial compared to yours. Glad you are close to the wonderful facility that is Mayo Clinic. I’m impressed that you can continue to create such beautiful quilts. I’m finding it hard to concentrate. Best wishes to you both. Will be keeping you both in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteOh my, Nancy, you guys have been through it. I hope and pray that time will be quick and your husband will get the care he needs. Keep your mind focused on your family and your craft and let life deal with the rest. Beautiful quilt, as always, and I love the idea of thinking about the quilt design in that manner.
ReplyDeletePraying here for you both too!! Wow - tho!! the places you took the photos make it look like an installation in an art gallery - so cool!!! Hugs and Fingers crossed my Friend
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you're going through such a hard experience. I pray that the wait and the recovery will be short. My son in law had a kidney transplant just weeks ago, and is doing incredibly well. We live in an amazing time. Your quilt is wonderful, and so is the setting for the photos.
ReplyDeleteI hope your DH doesn't have to wait a year before he can get his new heart. Your virtual retreat sounded so fun. What kind of games did you play? I enjoyed seeing that bold quilt in all the "medical" setting!--TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful. Prayers for you and your husband.
ReplyDeleteI love the alternate setting that you choose, and those fabrics are so fun. They aren't my normal colorway, but I love Zen Chic and this is no exception. Dreaming is the perfect pantograph. I am glad you were able to do this beautiful photo shoot at the Mayo - it really warms the place! Praying for you and Mahlon that he gets a heart soon!
ReplyDeleteThank the Lord you were at Mayo when he had that episode! Wonderful to hear that he's been accepted for a transplant. The Stripology retreat looks like great fun.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you all have a tense wait ahead of you. Hopefully the time goes quickly and your hubby does well. I'll keep you in my thoughts -- good vibes can do so much good. I love seeing your quilt hanging in the modern building. It is surprising to me that nobody seems to notice the quilt! Perhaps the building needs some quilts to spice it up a bit. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI'm just now reading my Quilting posts and so sad to learn of your husband's health trials. But how fortunate to be accepted into the transplant program, and to be right there when that cardiac event happened. Many heartfelt wishes and prayers going your way! On a quilty note, I do like the layout you chose for your retreat quilt. It highlights all the blocks so well. And I do like the photo of the quilt hanging over the railing at Mayo. We have been there twice and their service and expertise is exceptional. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your recap and update about Mister G&P. You are SO fortunate to live near the Mayo Clinic. I recall many Iowans driving there for various treatments. It's a facility with an excellent reputation. I am praying for M too - that a heart will become available. And bless the family who has to make that difficult decision. So glad you're enjoying yourself, along with others who are close to you, when Gudrun offers a virtual retreat. It's the stuff of a happy life.
ReplyDeleteNancy, your quilt is beautiful. I'm so sorry to hear of your DHs heart issues. I join with you in prayer for him and you and your family that a heart will become available soon, and prayers for the family that donates it. I'm thankful you can wait at home where you can quilt and take your mind off of it somewhat. Sending hugs and prayers. Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.
ReplyDeletePrayers all goes well for your husband! You took advantage of the trip and got some great photos of your beautiful quilt!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rachel. We appreciate your prayers. Mayo Clinic has some beautiful buildings and a lot of different art on display. It adds interest to the visit! (I'm replying here because I don't have your email.)
ReplyDeleteMost importantly, I'll be praying for you and your husband and hoping for a very successful transplant soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for linking up this beautiful quilt with Favorite Finish; the Tula pink stripe for the binding is the perfect finishing touch!
