Last Saturday, five of us hopped in the car and did one section of the Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop! Keep reading to see what we received for visiting all 6 shops in the South Central Region, and what I did with mine!
This is the 20th year of the Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop. There are 36 quilt shops participating this year, in 7 different regions. This is down from 80+ shops in years past, with the retirement of a number of quilt shops, including the shop I worked at until the owner retired in 2024.There are six shops in the South Central Region. We left home at 9 AM. The first shop was about an hour away. Sew Quilty is in a brand new building/location. They were so welcoming! Our group included my sister, brother-in-law, neice, nephew and myself.Cabby's Corner Quilt & Fabric Store included an antique shop in the back half of the shop. Check out Bonnie's cute quilted tote bag that she finished recently! ⤴️Sewing Seeds Quilt Co. has always been a favorite of ours!
The Thimble Box in New Ulm has the most panels that I have ever seen in a quilt shop! We missed getting a photo there because it is located along the old Main Street where a polka band was playing at the time!
We stopped for lunch at Happy Joe's Pizza. We ordered a cheeseburger pizza⤴️, and a Canadian bacon and sauerkraut pizza! ⤵️ They were both great! By the way, our skilled chauffeur, my brother-in-law, doubled as our cameraman, so there are only 4 of us in the photos.
River City Quilts had cookies, along with quilts, of course!Our last shop of the day was Quilter's Dream in Montgomery, the Kolacky capital of the world. We visited on the weekend of the Annual Kolacky Days Festival, so there was quite a bit going on. A "kolacky" is a Czech sweet bread with fruit filling. After finishing the quilt shop at 4:30 PM, we strolled down the street to the bakery for an apple kolacky! For finishing the South Central Region, we received this 12 piece fat quarter bundle of Lori Holt fabrics. ⤴️ Aren't they the cutest!!! Now, I was inspired to jump right in with this bundle! Here's what I made:

I used all 12 fat quarters in this pattern by Doug Leko that I picked up at the last shop.The quilting is a honeycomb with random hearts. I do love it!The backing is a current clearance duvet cover from IKEA, Vänkrets, Twin Size for $16.99. ⤴️ This will back 1 or 2 more baby quilts. Did you know IKEA started giving out points last year? You need a "family account", which is free. I discovered I had two $10 off coupons for points accumulated!Aren't these the cutest prints! I had a Tula Pink stripe that I used for the binding.This quilt will go to the Royal Family Kids Camp in our area. This is a week long summer camp for children 6-12 years old who are in the foster care system. They are each given a quilt that they take home from camp. You may be wondering what I bought. Besides the pattern for the quilt above, I purchased one other pattern that I may use for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.
It was a super fun day of quilt shops, good food, great company and a refreshing drive through the countryside!

That was fun! Loved the photos - what a beautiful family, and how nice they accompanied you. The fat quarters made such a pretty quilt. I guess I need to check out our nearest IKEA - that backing is really neat. Love the honeycomb heart quilting!

DeleteI have not been on the MN shop hop for years. But one year we received an impressive bundle of black and whites. I am kinda jelly of your Lori Holt bundle!! I am impressed you already used them up in a week!!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun!! Your quilt using the FQs is lovely. I had to look online and see what shops are in that region this year. I love River City in Mankato. And Sewing Seeds is another one of my favorite shops in Minnesota. My cousin and I have often met in Mankato or New Ulm for a girls weekend - a nice "in between" location. Quilt Dakota is going on right now too although I've only gotten to 2 shops so far. There are 49 across both North and South Dakota.

ReplyDeleteI looked it up -- Montgomery is the world capital while West is the Texas capital. And they spell it kolache.
DeleteThat sounds like a very fun day, Nancy, and you ended up with a really pretty bundle of fabric! I love the quilt you made from it. My LQS here is called Quilter's Dream! I grew up having homemade kolache as a family tradition handed down from the Czech side of the family. I didn't know it could be spelled kolacky or that there was a world capitol for it. Yummy!

That is a very generous gift for making it to all six shops. And a great quilt made from them as a result.
The idea of sending home a quilt with each child at the camp is a very special idea.
Family, shopping, good food and adventure- you cannot get any better than that! What a wonderful ,fun filled day with your family. The fabric bundle is gorgeous and you went to town on making the gorgeous quilt.

They changed the dates (and region) of the "All Carolinas" one I did with my MIL the last few years so I will miss out on doing that this year but get to enjoy yours vicariously! Sounds like you all had fun and how great that you can get your gift on the spot for completing the region . Haven't been to IKEA in a few years so didn't know about the points even though I already have an account. Hmmm, may have to make a run just to see if I could snag that duvet sale, LOL!! I've alway heard their sheets make good backings too.

ReplyDeleteHow fun to go on a shop hop with family! I can't imagine any male I know who would willingly participate in something like this. Ha! Looks like you had a nice variety of shops to visit, and Happy Joe's... I haven't heard of one of those for years. The pizza looks great! Why am I not a bit surprise that you have already made a quilt with the fat quarters you earned? Leave it to you to jump right in and seem to miraculously make a quilt. You're very generous too. I'm glad to know you had a good time... even to finding out you earned IKEA coupons. Happy times!
ReplyDeleteFamily field trip plus quilt shops- what could be better? I spotted Bonnie’s tote right from the first pic- love it and so roomy. Now those deep dish pizzas, those are added adventure for sure. You kept it going by diving right into the fq quilt. Honeycomb looks so good in this. Lucky little recipient, hope they all have a great camp experience.
