Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Karen made this Sturgis Motorcycle Rally t-shirt quilt for her friend. Every t-shirt is related in some way to the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, going back to 1995.

The moment I opened it up, I knew what I wanted to quilt it with, an edge-to-edge called "Heatwave". It just fit the theme!

Typically I quilt t-shirt quilts with a meander or some other freemotion quilting, since t-shirt quilts are usually a mine field of raised letters, motifs, plastic-fused pictures and other items to be avoided or tip-toed around. I found Karen's quilt super flat, smooth and only one "watch out" item--this pocket, which I easily went around:

Another view of the quilting, Heatwave, a free pantograph at Urban Elementz, here.

Karen used this super fluffy, soft flannel--love the print!

This quilt finishes at 68" X 111" and will make a great memory quilt for the owner of these t-shirts!

Great job, Karen!!!

Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  2. I really like how she added those smaller squares as sort of random corner stones, that's a neat idea! Heatwave looks great on this quilt, just the right touch :)

  3. This is a great quilt, and full of memories. I recall being at Sturgis one year as the rally was beginning to gather. Never have I seen so many Harleys in one place (the ground actually shook as they drove by). Heatwave is perfect for the quilting! Nice job!
