At the end of March, my sister-Quilter Bonnie, our Quilting Cousin Sue and I enjoyed a real "treat"!!! A virtual quilt retreat, that is, along with 250 other quilters and Gudrun of GE Quilt Designs as our leader and teacher!!! Here's my first quilt finish from our retreat!
Quilt Info:
Pattern: Strippy Stairways from Stripology Mixology 3 by Gudrun Erla
Size: 66" x 81"
Fabrics: Weather Report by Leslie Tucker Jenison for Robert Kaufman
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton
Thread: Glide--Lead Grey
Quilting: Blender ⤵️ from Modern-Textiles.com
Interesting Info: It's hard to sum up such a packed, fun-filled time! The retreat started on a Wednesday afternoon, continued from 8 AM to 9 PM on Thursday and Friday, and wrapped up at 5 PM on Saturday. In prep for the virtual retreat, we each got an amazing box of quilters' goodies: 12 coordinating half-yards of fabric (we could choose between 8 different lines), 3 yards of coordinating background, 1 yard for bindings, ruler stickers, a light grey spool of Aurifil thread, 2 custom quilt labels, a cup, visor, coaster, fat quarter, GEasy Malted Milk Balls, SnapPeas, a bingo card, which we played four times, some recipes, our zoom schedule and three new patterns that Gudrun designed just for the retreat!!! Plus a discount coupon to go shopping at Gudrun's store after all the fun was over!
The retreat included many teaching sessions, demos, tips and tricks from Gudrun, but so much more! Including games, stretching sessions, breakout rooms of smaller groups, and questions & answers from Gudrun. It was a fun-filled, packed 4 days, all from the comfort of our own homes!
Our fabric pack was enough to make two different throw size quilts and two table runners of the same design--one to keep and one to swap with someone who has a different fabric line. I chose to expand my first quilt to a larger throw size--we're a family of tall people! And I used different fabrics for my second quilt--that one is still on the design wall, so watch for it in the future!
I used a Kona grey for my backing, with a smidge of this Warehouse District fabric line filling in, also by Leslie Tucker Jenison for Robert Kaufman. ⤴️
Here's one of the custom label we each received in our retreat boxes!!! ⤴️ Gudrun designed and printed them from Spoonflower!
This is the second year in a row that Gudrun has hosted a virtual retreat in response to the covid pandemic. It was my first time to participate. The sign-up this year was so popular that Gudrun held the same retreat over two different sessions. Retreaters checked in from 9 countries and 45 US states. Gudrun plans on continuing with a virtual annual retreat in the future as it fills a need for quilters all over the world to participate.
Gudrun designed this quilt pattern specifically for our retreat! The pattern will be included in a new book, Stripology Mixology 3, that she will be publishing later this summer.
I'll be sharing my other quilt and table runners from the retreat in the future. Gudrun's virtual retreat was a super fun "treat" that I would definitely recommend to any quilter!!!

I really like this design! The virtual retreat sounds like a fun activity!
ReplyDeleteI love the figure 8 type quilting. It's really perfect for this quilt. The grey background fabric goes well with Weather Report fabric. This quilt will always make you think of the special quilting retreat treat!

Wow, I like this one too. The colours are great against the grey.
ReplyDeleteLove that quilting design, too!
Oh that sounds like a blast!! And now you have a totally finished quilt already, great work and I think that is a really cool quilting design also.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it sounds like a blast! Your quilt is so cool with that choice of fabrics and that fun quilting design. Looking forward to seeing the other quilt, too!
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! What a pretty quilt and how fun that you were able to participate in a virtual retreat. It's not quite as much fun as being able to walk around and see what others are working on, but nearly. Nice job - I love all the different fabrics you used. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful quilt, Nancy! Neat design and great fabric, too. Your virtual retreat sounds amazing!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a blast! I love the grey background fabric. Great finish!!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! A retreat at home, in the comfort of your studio. I rather like working that way and love seeing what you made. The fabrics are fun and the kit sounds like it was a perfect. I love that she printed labels for the group….such a great thing to do. Love your choice of quilting design too!
ReplyDeleteThat really sounds like a great time. How cool to have a finished quilt (that is gorgeous) as well.

What a fun. Packed full weekend. I like Strippy Staircase… it would be great to use up scraps and jelly rolls if the strips are that wide. And you always seem to pick the best quilting designs. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteFun quilt finish, Nancy!!
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, that sounds like a lot of fun! Love your quilt :-)

This sounds like something I would love, so I am going to keep it in mind for next year and read her newsletters, which I get in my Inbox, a little more carefully! Funny, this is the second 'convo' I've had today about quilt retreats... I love the virtual idea as agonizing over what to pack always stresses me out.
ReplyDeleteAmazing! I love the virtual retreat idea too!. I wonder if I could accomplish it. I'll watch for the other "fruits of the retreat". I'm sure they too are amazing!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's from the book Stripology Mixology 3 by Gudrun Erla. There's a link to the book where the pattern is noted.
