🌈RSC Finish x 7

Here's what I've been working on for the past month!!!
Throughout 2022, I super enjoyed making 196 blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC), spread out over 10 months' time! It's a great feeling to turn a basketful of familiar scraps into quilts!!!

The pattern I used is Scrap Happy Rainbow Connection from Amy Smart

Part of the challenge in quilting these quilts was to come up with seven different pantographs that give a rainbow look. It turns out I had these seven in my library--no need to buy any new ones! The names of each are noted in the quilt details.
Now, for the individual quilt details.

Quilt Info #1:
Size: 76" x 99"
Batting: Quilters Dream 80/20
Thread: top thread--Fabulous Ocean Breeze; bobbin thread--Glide Cardinal
Pantograph: City of Fountains ⤵️ from 627Handworks
The top thread is rainbow variegated!!! ⤴️ ⤵️
I followed the pattern designer's layout size on this first one. When it was done I decided it's larger than I'd like--an extra long twin size, bordering on full size!!! I decided to make the rest of the quilts throw size, which is how I ended up with 7 quilts!!!
The backing is an extra-wide backing I had on hand and had bought at half price.
Quilt Info #2: Smaller size from here on!!!
Size: 50" x 73"
Backing: Minkee
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton Request (thinnest)
Thread: top thread--Fantastico Oyster Shell; bobbin thread--Glide Putty
Pantograph: Crop Circles  ⤵️ from MyCreativeStitches
This top thread resembles the Grunge background--Fantastico, Oyster Shell is a mostly off-white thread with a light grey mixed in. I used this variegated thread as the top thread on the rest of the quilts--it was perfect!!!
The backing and self-binding on this one is Minkee! Again, I had it on hand and had bought it at half price.
Quilt Info #3:
Size: 51" x 74"
Backing: Sherpa
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton Request (thinnest)
Thread: top thread--Fantastico Oyster Shell; bobbin thread--Glide Linen
Pantograph: Shine ⤵️ from SewShabbyQuilting
I sized this pantograph on the large side because Sherpa backing begs for a more open, large-scale quilting design. But in doing so, when I finished the quilt, I felt like there was too big a gap above the arches.  ⤵️
I went back and added a serpentine row using an oval ruler. Much better now!!!  ⤵️ (The blue water-erasable dot in the photo above is the reference dot for the fill-in row I added.)
Sherpa backing and self-binding.  It's too thick to add my label!
I tried a different layout with this one, kind of a rainbow arch.
Quilt Info #4: I went back to the X's and O's layout here.
Size: 50" x 74"
Backing: Sherpa
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton Request (thinnest)
Thread: top--Fantastico Oyster Shell; bobbin thread--Glide Linen
Pantograph: Rolling Hills Echo ⤵️ from 627Handworks
I used the last of my Sherpa, bought at half price, for the back of this one, with self-binding.
Quilt Info #5:
Size: 50" x 73"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% White Select
Thread: top--Fantastico Oyster Shell; bobbin thread--Glide Light Turquoise
Pantograph: Random Clams ⤵️ from Urban Elementz
Another extra-wide backing I had bought at half price. This piece stretched far enough to back the last 3 quilts, plus it worked as binding on 2 of them!!!
Quilt Info #6:
Size: 50" x 73"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% White Select
Thread: top--Fantastico Oyster Shell; bobbin thread--Glide Light Turquoise
Pantograph: Deco Arch ⤵️ from Longarm League
I filled in a little on the backing of this one with a matching Japanese print! ⤵️
Quilt Info #7: This was the last quilt I put together. I had a lot of purple, pink and green leftover at the end, but I managed to make an acceptable gradation layout! ⤵️
Size: 50" x 73"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% White Select
Thread: top--Fantastico Oyster Shell; bobbin thread--Glide Light Turquoise
Pantograph: Bubble Clams ⤵️ from SewShabbyQuilting

If you're a digital longarm quilter, go to Sew Shabby Quilting, sign up for her newsletter and you'll get two free pantos! This panto, Bubble Clams, is one that I received!!!
Are you thinking--what is she going to do with 7 quilts?!! Some will go to charity and some will go to family and friends as gifts. A throw size quilt seems the most giftable.
I'm excited to do the RSC again in 2023! This year I'm making simple 36-patch blocks using 2 1/2" squares from my collection. I was inspired by woodberry_way on Instagram--here's her baby quilt:
I sorted through my 2 1/2" collection--here's what I have to work with:
I have two dark blue stacks and one bright blue stack--the colors for January, the colors I have the most of!!! Now that I'm finished with my 2022 RSC quilts, I'm ready to get to work on my 2023 RSC blocks:
See the colors for each month, and Saturday link parties at Angela's blog: SoScrappy!!!

Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  1. OMG, where to even begin as you have so much to admire in this post! I loved watching you build these this year. Did you use the same background fabric for all of these? Such beautiful colors, fun layouts, and the quilting is just divine!! Well done:)

    1. Thanks, Vicki!!! To answer your question, yes, I had a bolt of some shade of white Grunge that I had bought at half price and it lasted me through all the quilts. I ran out for the border of the last one and subbed in another shade of Grunge white, but I don't think anyone will notice!

  12. Of course, I was wondering what you would do with 7 quilts. Thanks for sharing your plans. But what really struck me is how this project let you determine your favorite layout, which pantographs work best and even use up not just scraps but various backings and battings you had. Looking forward to seeing those 36 patch blocks work up.

  36. This is such an awesome post, Nancy! Your RSC quilts turned out great, but it's an extra-special treat to see them quilted with seven different quilting designs. And I agree; throw size IS ideal for gifting even though most quilters go straight to Queen or King size when they think of making a special quilt as a gift. Bed quilts, if actually used on beds, make such a huge impact on the room's decor that the recipient really needs to be engaged from the very beginning to ensure that they like the finished quilt enough to put it on their bed and decorate the whole room around it. But throw quilts are low commitment, as they can be rotated seasonally and don't necessarily need to "match the room." Bonus for the quilter: throw quilts take less time, less fabric, and cost less money to make! Congrats on your SEVEN Smashing Finishes!

  37. BTW, your minky bound edges look really good. Do you have a tutorial somewhere for the method you use to get such great results?
