Here's my Holly quilt, the 9th quilt in the Stripology Quickies Club!
Quilt Info:
Pattern: Holly from GE Designs
Size: 42" x 56"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton, White
Thread: Glide--Mint
When using Minkee, I love to turn the Minkee backing to the front for a soft, easy binding! After quilting, I carefully trim the batting off at the edge of the quilt. Try not to cut into the Minkee! Then cut the Minkee backing 1 1/4" from the edge of the quilt, turn it over twice and topstitch! I lengthen the stitch length a bit for this topstitching, too.
Trimming at 1 1/4" worked great for a baby quilt. I would use a 1 1/2" to 2" width for a throw size quilt.
When you look at the entire quilt, you can see a friendship star and a pinwheel block.⤴️ So it's rather surprising that the quilt block is the 4-patch you see below, consisting of 8 rectangles. ⤵️ It's all in the color placement and orientation of the diagonal slice. My pink blocks are A blocks and my light green blocks are B blocks.

I love this mint green Minkee! And I love how quilting shows up beautifully on a smooth Minkee backing!!!

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt! I love that you self-bound the quilt with your Minky backing - so luscious for a baby quilt! Thanks for sharing at TGIFF today. These stripology quickies look like so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI spotted the friendship stars right off the bat - love that pattern! Such pretty colors too, and the minky backing is just perfect. Thank you for the tips about using it as binding, I'm bookmarking!
ReplyDeleteGreat finish! It is interesting how a block can make secondary designs.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness Nancy, 9 quickie quilts done! They all look like so much piecing work which makes it puzzling how they could possibly be quickies. The binding on this latest one looks wider than usual, I like the effect and wonder what size you used and is it double fold?
ReplyDeleteThat is a sweet finish! I applaud you using the minkee as a binding. . .I did it once and that was enough for me!--TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteAnother cutie for sure. Got any minkee tips I need to know, I bought my first minkee last month.
ReplyDeleteThis us a pretty one, Nancy! I love the soft colors and those surprise friendship stars. But wait - is it really made from all rectangles with a stitch and flip corner triangles? It took me awhile to see that. Great design!
ReplyDeleteI love mint green for a baby quilt. The quilting looks absolutely stunning on the Minkee. Thank you for explaining how the pattern of the blocks comes together.
ReplyDeleteA delightful quilt, love the colour combo. And yes, so interesting to find those other 2ndary blocks hidden in plain sight!
ReplyDeleteMinkee is so soft. And the quilting design looks great on it.
ReplyDeleteThat is a fun pattern, and I would never have guessed it was such a simple block! The self binding is perfect for this and I do love this mint green with the fabric on the front. Fun to use the backing as the binding with minky!
ReplyDeleteThis is a delightful baby quilt. Gorgeous colours.
ReplyDeleteThe green minkee looks lovely and really shows up the quilting.
I like that method of binding. It looks good.
It is really interesting to look carefully at the quilt to see the various components making the design.
What a fun quilt! The colors shine through with your backing and lovely quilting! I love the Stripology rulers! Minkee and flannel are my favorite backings! You are such prolific quilter. Congratulations on your achievement!
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I love the sweet colors and patterns, what a fun block arrangement! The green minkee is perfect and your quilting lovely. Love the idea of minkee binding. Thank you for sharing and linking up your inspiring work!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great baby quilt. It's interesting to see what the block was and the finished top. I saw the friendship stars but the pinwheels don't stick out to me as much. And, yes, that minkee really shows off the quilting. And, it is a great design.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super quilt in a lovely colorway. I confess I've never used Minkee but it's a great idea to use it for the binding.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing how you did the minky self binding. I have used Minky for backings but never bindings. On to the bucket list it goes!! Very sweet quilt.
ReplyDeleteAnother beauty! I really like that thread color and design for this one.
ReplyDeleteLove this one - your color palette is so pretty!! and great panto!!!
