Japanese 99 Charms

These baby quilts are made from 5" charm squares of Japanese prints, cut from leftover bits and saved up over several years.
I'm making 30 baby quilts to send to the mission board in Japan that my husband and I worked with for 25+ years. They will display them at a special event in Tokyo, in my husband's memory, before taking them on a mission trip to Cambodia in the fall. Read to the end to find out my current baby quilt count.

My Quilt Info #1:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton
Thread: Glide--Denim
Pantograph: Baptist Fan ⤵️ from Three Sisters Fabric
I picked quilting designs that are similar to Japanese sashiko designs. This style of " Baptist Fan" is used a lot in traditional Japanese motifs. You can see it in 2 of the prints in this quilt. ⤵️
I'm putting flannel on the backs of these quilts, which makes them nice and soft. I was gifted a stack of donated flannel from my church quilt group.
My younger daughter was visiting home recently. One afternoon she volunteered to arrange quilt squares on the design wall for me. She set up a total of 17 quilts, including these four. What a time saver for me!
My Quilt Info #2:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton
Thread: Glide--Denim
Pantograph: Diamonds Are Forever ⤵️ from Intelligent Quilting
Another sashiko inspired quilt design--"Diamonds Are Forever".
Japan is said to be the country of "blue and white". This quilt is in honor of traditional blue and white Japanese prints.
You may have noticed, some of the flannel backing is not quite wide enough. In that case, I've added a strip on one side. ⤴️
My Quilt Info #3:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton
Thread: Glide--Denim
Pantograph: Baptist Diamonds ⤵️ from 627 Handworks
This sashiko inspired quilting design is called "Baptist Diamonds".
I love using striped fabrics for bindings!
I have 2 side-by-side design walls, each 4 feet wide X 7 feet tall. While my daughter was arranging on one design wall, I was labeling the set-up quilt on the other design wall and taking it down in order. Then she would move over to the now empty design wall and start all over again. I had the squares presorted for her in stacks of 99.
My Quilt Info #4:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton
Thread: Glide--Denim
Pantograph: Rolling Hills ⤵️ from 627 Handworks
For something different, she arranged this quilt in a colorwash style. I like how it turned out!
I'm calling these quilts "99 Charms" as they are 9 charm squares across and 11 charm squares down. A blog reader said that's what they call them in their charity quilt group.
I thought it would be good to have some Japanese print baby quilts for the Japanese group to take with to Cambodia.
I added extra on the bottom of this flannel backing. ⤵️
Here are all four Japanese "99 Charms" quilts. I have one more arranged and ready for stitching, but that will have to be another day.
My current count of on-hand baby quilts is 28. I have 8 pieced tops that need quilting and binding, and 6 more arranged and ready for sewing.

I have quite a few pink quilts, so I may go beyond 30 and then pick out a more even number of boy and girl quilts to ship.

Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  1. I was wondering how big your design wall is - sounds like you had a nice assembly line going! I really love the colorwash quilt, but they are all beautiful. That is so nice they will be displayed in memory of your husband. I look forward to seeing photos of the display. Will there be photos of their arrival in Cambodia?

  7. So very pretty and cheerful! I like Japanese prints; at one time I was obsessed with them and always bought some when I attended quilt festival in Houston. It’s nice to have a quilting helper to arrange the squares for you! I’m sure it speeds up the process!

  11. Once again - always! - you have been hard at work making beautiful quilts. I'm envious that you had a "personal design" to share the process with. No doubt that made the making even more fun. You made good choices, using Japanese prints, and lovely longarm quilting designs. What a beautiful tribute to Mahlon. He's so proud of you!
