RSC May 🧡 Part 2

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for May is orange. My RSC goal this year is to whittle down my stack of 5" scrap charm squares by turning them into baby quilts, 9 squares across by 11 squares down, therefore "99 Charms" quilts. Here are the two I made for May.
My Quilt Info #1:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton
Thread: Glide--Apricot Blush
Pantograph: Zigger Zagger ⤵️ from Lovely Threads
A fun geometric quilting design--Zigger Zagger! If you're a digital longarm quilter, it's free with signing up for Lovely Threads newsletter.
These are all charm squares with orange in there somewhere.
The backing is 5 strips of children's flannel. I like how that came together! ⤴️
My Quilt Info #2:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton
Thread: Glide--Apricot Blush
Pantograph: Porch Rail ⤵️ from The Quilting Mill
More orange leaning charms squares.
Another fun geometric quilting design, Porch Rail. It happens that this digital quilting design is also free with signing up for The Quilting Mill's newsletter.
More flannel backing. I do like flannel on the back of baby quilts.
My RSC 99 Charms quilt count for 2026:

January--💙💙💙
February--💚💚
March--❤️❤️
April--🩷🩷🩷
May--🧡🧡
My younger daughter was home recently. She arranged 17 baby quilts on my design wall for me--what a great help! They're labeled by rows and ready for chain piecing. These two quilts are part of her work.

I'm sending 30 baby quilts to Cambodia this summer, via Japan and the mission board my husband & I worked with. At this time I have 25 baby quilts finished, 8 tops pieced and 6 groups that need piecing. I think I have it covered.

  1. Those are such bright and happy quilts! i love how they came together. Orange can be tricky, but somehow everything works together.

  2. I love that you are adding pieces that might have a different color background but have orange in the design somewhere as it adds a lot of interest. So nice that your daughter arranged a bunch for you, that will be a quick sew.

  6. You surely will have it covered! Your oranges look so pretty together, they have an "I Spy" vibe to them. I would like to borrow your daughter, she did great! How will you pack all the quilts for travel with the mission group?

    1. I’ll be folding each quilt smaller, then wrap each quilt in extra wide Saran Wrap (Costco), and put them in a box or two. It’ll probably take 2 boxes.

  8. 5" charms work so well for baby quilts or many other ideas.

  9. You know, charm squares into RSC charity quilts is a really brilliant way to blow through your scraps and really see progress. Our church has a quilting group that donates to Lutheran World Relief, mostly simple tops made from larger squares like layer cake or even larger, and they hand tie them with fluffy poly batting. But the 5" charm size is more scrap friendly and would still make up quickly, especially if I used AccuQuilt to cut the squares and chain pieced them together. Thanks for the inspiration (as usual!).

  10. These are gorgeous, Nancy! I love looking at your charm quilts up close and seeing what you've put into them. I Spy a fox and an owl! That's wonderful that people offer free pantos for long arm quilters. Your quilting is always perfect!

  11. Your daughter put together a nice combo. There are enough non-orange to let your eye rest from all the bright colors. Love them!

I have some 10-inch squares and am wondering how I could use them...
    Wishing you a happy Sunday,

  16. What fun these quilts are and I like both the fun quilting patterns you choose. How great they will go to a ministry that you and Mahlon were a part of. Oh, and how fun that Susanna was home and put up some quilts to keep you moving along on your goal...a special treat.

  17. Love the help of those daughters! I found that cutting 9" strips, then squaring, worked efficiently for a bunch of very old fabric that came to me. My daughter graciously agreed to design them in diagonals on my bed for me. Then she didn't stop. But surveyed the fabric in multiple rooms, pulled together 5-6 different groupings of old and new for addt'l twin quilt top/back kits. I love her younger and far more creative eye; and admire how instantaneously she could do what would take me years of struggle. I refer to her as my Design Consultant. Her dyslexia prefers, even needs, far simpler designs than most patchwork. I am thrilled whenever I can get her input. Laura H.

  18. It is really interesting to see how well a quilt can come together with just a single colour as the theme. These two are wonderful. You have a great eye for placement of the blocks.
Looks like you and your daughter are well ahead with your planning for your donation quilts. That is impressive.

  19. Great job finishing these quilts. How nice to have your daughter's help too. Mine's a quilter but is so tied up with work and soccer practices and games for her kids. I think I'll mention having some help when they visit in July. I could definitely get some 5" squares organized. Then the grands could put them into a design whatever way they want. Brilliant idea to get that help. I enjoyed reading your comments on this post too.

  23. Very fun baby quilts. You did a good job of choosing your colors, the orange doesn't overwhelm the quilts.

  24. Bright and pretty little quilts! Well done to your daughter for putting together such a great color combination, she has inherited your eye for color! Backing flannels are the best! Thank you for sharing your lovely quilts and linking up.

  25. You are go-go-go these days! I'm very impressed with your productivity, and there isn't a quilt you've shared that isn't adorable. I am partial to the orange ones. All your creations will certainly be loved, especially with those soft flannel backings.

  26. Cute quilts, Nancy - so bright and cheerful! Thanks for the links, though the Porch Rail one was not working. She has some great digital pantos though and I will definitely revisit her site. More than one caught my eye! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.
