Desk Top Cubes 🔲 & Nova💥

I made these Desk Top Cubes from Japanese yukata fabrics to give to my quilt friends at the retreat we had this past weekend!

These Desk Top Cubes are from the Minikins patterns designed by Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness. They include 12 patterns of small bags and containers.

Annie's Soft and Stable, a sponge interfacing/batting, is what gives them such great shape and stand-up-ability. There are three pattern sizes of Desk Top Cubes. These are the small size. Here is one ready for use:

Next, I want to show you what I was working on at the retreat--the Nova quilt pattern, by Gudrun Erla. I took a class recently at Quilt Cove and we learned how to use the Stripology Squared ruler, while making this quilt. I finished making all 78 blocks at the retreat! (I had 10 of them done previously.)
You can use Layer Cakes for the pattern, like on the cover. But I used one fabric for all the lights--a grey pin dot by Jen Kingwell:

And I cut my darks from stash. I put my blocks up on my design wall as soon as I got home:

Now to get it all put together...
Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  1. Those cubes are so cute, and I can find a million uses for them. Thanks for sharing the info on them! Your quilt looks really nice hanging out on your wall - it will be fun to see it all together. I'm envious of your retreat time... :)

  2. Those cubes are SO cute! I also bought the minikens pattern, but I've yet to start them. Your Nova quilt is sure to be beautiful! I have the Stripology ruler, and it's my favorite ruler. I'm not sure if the Stripology squared is similar or not, but if it is, what a blast to use it!

  3. Hi Nancy,
I really need to make a holder like that for myself. I am using a mug that says 'Chicago' on it. Every time I take something out or put something in it, it clanks and it is not quilted. How is that a good representation of what I enjoy doing??! I need to get on that, STAT. ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. I love these cubes with the fabric. What a great gift this was to give out at a retreat. I've never tried Soft and Stable--have you ever used Bonsal R Foam? I'm wondering if they're the same. I'm going to check out Sara's book. Thanks for sharing.

  15. Very cute cubes and a great gift idea. The Nova pattern is really interesting. It took me a while to see that the sections are a little skewed. I like it.
