❤️ Be My Valentine ❤️

We are well past Valentine's Day, but hearts are a classic symbol of love no matter the time of year. Let me introduce you to Be My Valentine Heart Mug Rug:

I made this heart for my dear friend, Paula, who is fighting ovarian cancer. Paula is a talented knitter and quilter and has been faithfully podcasting, plus hosting knitting retreats, for 8 years as Knitting Pipeline. You can find her podcast on iTunes and her videos on YouTube
I made the patchwork piece by strip piecing, just big enough to cut out the heart:

The front side, after quilting--each heart has nearly 200 1/2" finished squares:

On turning over, I discovered I managed to quilt a "bridge" into the backing!?! Snip, snip...

After making one successfully, I had enough 1" strips left over to make two more.
I love how the rickrack adds a lacy look to the hearts!

One now resides at Paula's house. You can see her "joy wall" with cards and many knit, crocheted and stitched hearts on her Caring Bridge site. The heart I made hadn't arrived when she took the photo, but there are many others to admire.
My mom has a heart on her wall, and here's one hanging by our calendar:

Grace & peace!!! ~Nancy

  13. Those sweetheart mug rugs are amazing! I wish you had shown the back side of the finished piece, though. I adore the ricrac edging and I'm trying to figure out how you applied it. Did you sew it to the edges like a piping/welt between the quilted front and backing fabric and then turn it to the back side? Or did you stitch it to the edges and then apply a felt backing or something like that? I really like the way it adds a dainty scallop to the edges of your hearts, like those little paper doily hearts we used to make Valentines when we were little. :-)
