🎁Taylor for Tyler🎁

Christmas gift reveal!!!
Quilt Info:
Pattern: Taylor by Gudrun Erla
Fabrics: Tahoe Ski Week by Moda, plus others from my collection
Size: 60" X 75"
Batting: Quilters Dream Orient
Thread: Glide--Light Grey
Quilting: Hitch Hiking 2 from Intelligent Quilter
Interesting Info: I made this for our son-in-law, an avid skier, for Christmas. They have gone skiing in Tahoe. Plus, we usually drive around Lake Tahoe every year, on our way to visiting DH's hometown. This is the first quilt I've made just for him!
I love how this quilting, "Hitch Hiking 2", looks like mountains, or as DD2 noted, like trees:
These fabrics include skiers on the slopes, mittens & gloves hanging on clotheslines, skis, snowflakes, plaids, plus other coordinating stash:⤵️
For backing, I had another piece of IKEA duvet cover that matched just right. And, I love using leftover bits for a scrappy binding. ⤵️
I did send it through the washer and dryer before mailing it. I was very surprised to note that it shrunk 6" both ways after it came out of the dryer!
Merry Christmas, Tyler, and to you all, and a happy skiing year!!!
Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  1. 6 inches?! What do you think caused that much shrinkage? Anyway - I love the colors, the patterns in the fabric. You put some good thought into this gift - I'm sure he'll enjoy it! That quilting design really works well with the quilt, too!

  2. What a perfect gift and I love the colors and fabrics. Was 60x75 the size after shrinking?

    1. 60" X 75" was the size after piecing, and before quilting, washing and drying. It shrunk to 54" X 69".

    2. So that's about 8-10% shrinkage, the same as I've been seeing when I take the time to measure after washing. Did you think to measure the quilt top AFTER quilting, but BEFORE washing to see how much was due to the quilting stitches drawing up the quilt as opposed to actual fabric/batting shrinkage? I have been just routinely adding an additional 10% to every quilt's length and width to allow for shrinkage if I need it to fit a bed once it's done. Your son's quilt is beautiful, and yes, the quilting does look like mountains fit for skiing! Merry Christmas to all of you!

  10. Gorgeous quilt, but so annoying about that much shrinkage. I think two things are happening...the cotton was not prewashed (I am guessing) and the quilting probably shrunk it up 2” around or more after quilting. This 8-10% shrinking is not a happy number. I am washing one in all poly and I have measured it after quilting, so I will be interested in seeing the change. I never quilted so heavily before, so I think that makes a big difference.

  15. That's a great quilt. I never thought to use an IKEA duvet for the backing. That's a lot of shrinkage. I always wash my fabrics before sewing...I like to have the shrinkage on the front end and not have a surprise at the end. Thanks for linking up with TGIFF.
