Antique Dogwood 🍃 Quilt

My neighbor's great-grandmother made this beautiful appliqué quilt top, circa 1930!!! She made two of these Dogwood quilts--one was hand quilted back in the day, and this one was left as a top.
Quilt Info:
Topper: Mrs. C. Roffert
Pattern: Mountain Mist Dogwood #29
Size: 89" x 98"
Batting: Quilters Dream 80 cotton/20 poly
Thread: Glide--Thyme
Quilting: Meandering Jasmine ⤵️ from Urban Elementz
Before you start thinking this antique quilt should've been custom quilted, know that Mary Sue already received that advice from a local quilting company. She wasn't interested in the $1000 quote she received (they have 5 longarms running daily), which was a reasonable price considering the time and talent it takes, or the 1 year waiting time. Instead she and I picked a complementary edge to edge and finished it, ready for use.
Interesting Info: This quilt top, the leftover fabrics, pattern and paper templates were all kept together in a muslin drawstring bag over the years. The envelope holding the templates is postmarked December 24, 1934, probably saved from around the time the quilt was being pieced and appliquéd.

As you can read below ⤵️, the pattern was obtained by sending 35 cents to Mountain Mist, referencing the pattern number.
Dogwood #29  ⤵️
The pattern included the hand quilting suggestions of spiderwebs in the diamond areas, crosshatching in the borders and flowers echoed in the center corners. ⤵️
Here is her shopping list, along with a sample of the suggested colors from The Stearns & Foster Company.  ⤵️
There was leftover yardage of the green and the brown fabrics together with the quilt. It's interesting that the fabrics were all 35" wide at that time!
The green background is machine pieced in an artful way, mitered corners and all! The flowers and branches are all hand appliquéd in super tiny stitches!
She did intense hand stitched embroidery around every brown patch and the yellow centers of the flowers!!!  ⤵️
For backing we chose a 108" wide muslin.  ⤵️
I finished the edge with a faux piped binding using the original green and brown fabrics that were saved along with the quilt top!!! ⤵️
Beautiful family heirloom, Mary Sue!!!

Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  1. BEAUTIFUL! The leaf design is very complimentary to the quilt. It's so nice you had the same fabrics to use for the binding. This quilt is a treasure!

  3. WOW! I love all the documentation that was with this quilt. The pantograph is perfect as is the faux binding in the original fabric. That is so much fun to have so much information on this quilt. I love the samples of the fabric choices too...I never saw that before. It's always hard to decide what the right thing to do is, but I think the choices were perfect and rescues another unfinished top from the past.

  6. It's a beauty, and you chose a really good quilting design for it. The owner will enjoy it now, and not have to take out a second mortgage to pay for custom quilting.

  7. This is stunning and how lovely that it can now be used and enjoyed. I think we are a bit too precious about old things sometimes. Better they are used and not just stuck in a drawer.
