What the Judge👩🏼‍⚖️ Said, 2024

We just had our county fair, August 5th through 11th! Having grown up in 4-H, I still get the urge to enter my latest projects in the county fair!!!🎡
This year I entered 5 quilts and 3 other fiber entries, 8 items total. It was the same quilt judge as the last two years, and once again, she had a lot of comments. I received: 1 Award of Excellence, 4 Blues/1st Place, 2 Reds/2nd Place, 1 White/3rd Place and 1 Pink/4th Place.

Below I have photos of the items I entered, the category it was entered in, the ribbon it received, the judge's comments in quotes, and my response below that. We don't get to talk with the judge personally and we don't see the comments until we pick up our items at the end of the fair.
1. Rugs--Crocheted--Blue Ribbon/1st Place: No comments. This was a different judge from the quilt judge.

It takes me one year to collect and make these fabric selvage rugs. This year I made TWO, thanks to my friend, Lynn, who has made 300 charity quilts this year! She removes the selvages at 1" and gives me a whole mountain of selvages at once. Combined with my own selvages, I was able to make a larger rug, plus get a better Roy G. Biv gradation on this rug. The finished size is 28" x 50".

I've made 8 of these selvage rugs so far and this one is my best to date, thanks to the colors and perfecting the design. Here's a photo of this rug open all the way, since you could only see a small bit in the counter at the fair.⤵️ Here's a link to how I make these rugs and the no-knot joins: Crocheted Selvage Rug.
2. 60" x 80" Quilt or Larger, Pieced & Machine Quilted by Entrant--Pink/4th Place: "Intriguing color palette is well balanced. All intersections and points should align. Quilting design is well done and unifies the theme. Excellent binding."

I was disappointed to get a pink ribbon on this one.🫢 Pink is scraping the bottom! It's true, some of the points don't match perfectly. Sandi, the needlecraft superintendent, said all the quilters setting up were loving this one in particular that "even had strawberries in the quilting", which made me feel better!
3.  60" x 80" or Larger, Scrap Quilt, Using at Least 40 Different Fabrics--White Ribbon/3rd Place: "The choice of fabric colors in this polychromatic piece creates a diagonal design that is very effective. Excellent binding. Long seams are straight. Variegated thread color is a good choice in the curved quilting."

Not sure why it got a 3rd place other than it was a big category and there was a lot of competition. This is one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge finishes from 2023.
4. Quilt Less Than 60" x 80", Machine Quilted by Entrant--Award of Excellence/Blue/1st Place: "Bold monochromatic piece. Change in value with the cornerstones adds interest. Quilting is well done and dynamic. Excellent binding."

This was a big category again, which included all quilt sizes from baby to throw quilts. I debated between entering a baby quilt or this quilt. On advice from family, I went with this quilt at the last minute. The visual impact was a plus.
5. Wall Quilts 249" Perimeter and Smaller, Pieced and Machine Quilted by Entrant--Red/2nd Place: "Vibrant color palette. Contrasts well on the light background. Try to reduce bulk at intersections. Piecing is well done! Excellent binding!"

I spun the seams at the intersections. I quilted this wall hanging fairly dense, which flattens out any natural bulk.🤷🏻‍♀️I do all my bindings by machine nowadays, and this judge said excellent binding on several of my quilts, so I guess she's okay with machine finished bindings!
6. Table Runner or Two Placemats--Blue/1st Place: "Excellent Piecing! Mitered corners are handled well. Color placement is well balanced."

This was made from fabric I won on Michelle's blog, From Bolt To Beauty, and is a quilt pattern from the book, Master Your Stripology Rulers
7. Sewing Other Than Garments, Purse/Tote--Red/2nd Place: "Nice colors and choice of fabrics. Zipper well done, top stitching excellent. Great job!"

My DH said--she must've given the blue to someone else.🤷🏻‍♀️
8. Hand Spinning, Not Otherwise Listed--Blue/1st Place: No comments. This was a different judge than the quilt judge.

I wasn't sure what category to enter this "fabric twine" in--it didn't involve sewing and it wasn't macrame, so I went with "Hand Spinning/Not Otherwise Listed". I guess the judge was okay with that!
My niece entered a loom knit hat and matching cowl this year and was very happy to get a Blue Ribbon/1st Place! She started loom knitting baby hats during the shut down in 2020 and has now knit over 1,500 hats! She donates them to Jack's Basket, where they give baskets of baby goodies to newborns with Down syndrome, and the Neo-natal section at the hospital. Gretchen is a young adult with Down syndrome and is passionate about knitting these hats, praying for others, and working at Chick-Fil-A!

Now, a few more photos of the quilts on display at our county fair last week. Stick around to the very end to see the 4 Champion winners, two of them made by my co-workers at the quilt shop!
These are the Grand Champion, below right,⤵️ and Reserve Grand Champion, below left.⤵️ The Grand Champion is appliquéd dresses made from handkerchiefs. This one would've gone to the state fair to represent our county, but it was made by a quilter from an adjacent county, which is legit to enter in our county fair but can not represent our county at the state fair.

The Reserve Grand Champion below, left, ⤵️ was made by Sandi who works at the LQS with me. It is her own design. The judge was especially taken by the spikey border, of which I agree! Sandi's patterns are all made from her template, Quilted Jewel. Her website is Irish Chain.
These are the "Over 65" Champion quilts. Not sure why they differentiate between over 65 and under 65!!! Below left⤵️ is the Over 65 Grand Champion, made by Barb who also works at the LQS with me and custom quilted by Sandi, the winner from above and also works at our LQS! This one will represent our county at the state fair. And below right⤵️ is the Over 65 Reserve Grand Champion.
And by the way, my premium check was $24. Did you go to the county fair this year? Did you enter anything?

Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  2. Congratulations Nancy! I think all of your entries should have received blue ribbons! I love seeing all the beautiful quilts, and I admire you and all the quilters who make the effort to display their quilts and subject them to the critiques of the judges!! Thanks once again for sharing this with us!! (Missy V.)

  3. Beautiful entries Nancy, and all of them are Grand Champions to me! I think your work is exquisitely made and quilted. Gretchen sounds amazing, her entries are gorgeous! Loved this post!

  4. Congratulations on your ribbons! So well deserved. I would have judged two county fairs this year but then I had a medical issue and had to bow out. I just love the variety and workmanship I see! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

  5. I enjoyed seeing what you entered in the fair, Nancy - they're all beautiful, and deserve a 1st place! 🥰 The judges must have a very challenging job. Of course, my favorite is your RSC 36 patch quilt. Those narrow black sashings are such a neat way to both connect and separate the different colors!

  6. Lovely work on all of your beautiful projects and congrats on your ribbons! I think it's great that you get any feedback at all from the judges. The one time I entered a local guild show, our quilt show committee was experimenting with a condensed timeline for judging that did not allow enough time for any scribed comments from the judge whatsoever. So there were just ribbons on some quilts, no ribbons on others, and none of the entrants got the benefit of constructive comments about what they did well and where they might improve on future projects.

  8. I find your fair posts so fascinating. It looks like quilting is very well represented at your fair (unlike in my county). That koala quilt makes me think of Charley Harper. Congrats on your ribbons!

  9. I always love this post every year to hear how you did at the fair! Great entries by the way, also looks like you had some competition. Do you think there were more or less entries this year? I didn't go to our fair, didn't even think about it!

  10. 4-H? In my opinion you can do four of those with your stunning quilts alone. Thank you for sharing with all of us so that we don't have to go to 4-H and battle the mud :-D

  13. I look forward to seeing what you enter each year, as well as your ribbons. It is always interesting to see the judges notes as well. Each quilt is a blue ribbon to me. They are all beautiful!

  14. I'm impressed by the number of items you entered and even more impressed by the ribbons. I have learned to take judge's comments, even the positive ones with a grain of salt. They need to say something. One of my favorite comments, years back was that my corners needed to be 90 degrees. Not something I worry about, but I do try to come close. So, when my quilt was returned with the comment I decided to check just how close those corners had come. Much to my delight all 4 were 90 degrees. Makes me wonder if the judge was looking at my quilt. :)

  15. Like the others, I enjoy seeing what you submit and the comments. I think the pink ribbon was just to coordinate with that beautiful quilt, although a blue would've set it off nicely! I'm so curious who the judges are!

  16. Lovely lovely quilts! I do not usually enter things in our fair. We have a different system it seems. A couple of local quilters seem to win every year! Not that they don’t deserve it, they do! But they put the rest of us to shame.

  17. Wow, congratulations Nancy for all the Ribbons you won! Fabulous judge comments for fabulous quilts. I love to see your entries! Thank you for sharing this great expérience, and the other winners. Well done! 👏👏🤩

  18. How nice to see all your lovely pieces! I'm impressed by the fact that you received a ribbon on everything you entered. Congratulations! Though I'm smiling about the $24 check which is typical for a fair. I often entered the Iowa State Fair, and remember writing back all my checks to the fair... they weren't worth cashing. :-) I love, love, love the twine you made! I think what makes it striking is that every bit has a light neutral with a color. Great idea. I also love your rainbow rug, and am impressed by your lovely, planned rainbow of colors. That design layout never occurred to me. Thank you for sharing all these pictures and information about your quilts, and those of others.

  19. Congratulations on your ribbon wins!! So much competition at Fairs. I just love your No. 3
especially, but all lovely projects and those crocheted rugs are such fun...Hugs, Julierose

  20. Competition is fierce in your corner of the world because you deserved more blue ribbons than that. Maybe the judge had a long day and didn't see your items properly. I congratulation you for all the beautiful things you did. That purse deserved a blue ribbon too. Congratulation to the ladies who work with you. I love their quilts too. Enjoy! ;^)

  21. Thanks for this interesting post! The quilts are lovely (especially yours!), and I was curious to read what the judges said. I have very seldom entered anything in a show, but I have a friend who is a certified judge. She says each quilt typically receives only 3-5 minutes of the judge's time.

  22. I too enjoy your fair posts! I do love your selvage rug. . .I am going to have try that! I did enter in my county fair, I'm picking up my items later today. Premium check will be $14 for two thirds, two seconds and two first places. We could only enter two quilts--one large and one small--because of hanging constraints.--TerryK@OnGoingProjects

  23. Congratulations to you and your coworkers!
I've never entered anything in the county fair. Here it's definitely geared toward kids and 4H & FFA. I'm trying to think of the few times I went, if there were many (any?) adult entries for any textile arts. Or anything other than garden related things. I'm guessing not as I haven't been back since DS outgrew the tiny carnival ride setup they have, about 20 years ago.

  24. Interesting post -- it amazes me that the judge doesn't mind machine bindings. I entered a couple of quilts in the state fair a year or two ago. It came in 2nd in its category. I had someone from my guild pick it up... the only reason I knew it won a ribbon was a check that came in the mail. I never saw a ribbon! Nor was it on the quilt when I was at the fair. Weird. I haven't entered anything since. My motivation is low!

  25. Congratulations, Nancy on the wins! They are well deserved. You always create the most beautiful quilts. Your selvege rug is fabulous. I have always wanted to create one myself. I wish you a fabulous week. Happy quilting. Hugs.

  28. Wonderful wins at the county fair! You did really well, and that is so gratifying to see that they recognize your talent. There are fairs here, but I haven't ventured to them....maybe 2025 I will start checking them out. You have a lot of talented co-workers too!

  29. I love everything you entered, Nancy! Congrats on the wins. It's been years since I entered anything into our county fair. I need to find out when it is and do that again! I always loved going into the building with all the entries at our county fair! Fun, fun!! And your niece sounds so awesome! So happy for her win and her enthusiasm for life! So sweet! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings! Have a great week!
