Svana is the 3rd quilt in the Stripology Quickies QAL! A new quilt with videos is being released every month for a year. The Svana video came out on January 1st.
Quilt Info:
Pattern: Svana from Stripology Quickies by GE Designs
Fabrics: Folk Floral by Lewis & Irene with Jo Rose, plus others
Size: 66" x 80"
Batting: Quilters Dream Batting Request
Thread: Glide--Graphite
Interesting Info: Svana is Gudrun of GE Designs daughter's name! Gudrun usually names her quilts with women's names, although I've noticed sometimes a guy's name will be used, like the Jojo quilt, named after her grandson, Johan.
My fabrics--I used 2 squares of each print, cut from my collection.⤴️I split my prints into 4 color groups--navy, grey, coral and cream.
For binding, I trimmed the backing at 2", folded it over twice to the front, and machine stitched it down. A couple of tips: 1. I lengthened the stitch length, and 2. It was so thick at the corners that I hand stitched the corners down.
The backing is a velour blanket I bought on sale at Costco recently for $12.99. It measures 92" x 98". It's thicker than minkee, so I would guess that most longarm quilters wouldn't accept them for backing. But as I'm my own longarm quilter, I gave it a try. Less dense quilting is recommended, which is why I chose "Skating". I love how this quilt turned out, front and back, both!!!
These are the 5 quilts I've made so far for the Stripology Quickies quilt along.⤵️ I made 2 versions of the first quilt, Lilo--a queen size and a table runner, and 2 versions of the 2nd quilt, Skyler--the original and 2.0. Svana is our third quilt in the QAL.
The next Stripology Quickies QAL, Ana, begins on February 12th with the release of the teaching video. We've already gotten the cutting out video, so I've got prep work to do!These are the 5 quilts I've made so far for the Stripology Quickies quilt along.⤵️ I made 2 versions of the first quilt, Lilo--a queen size and a table runner, and 2 versions of the 2nd quilt, Skyler--the original and 2.0. Svana is our third quilt in the QAL.
You can see a Skyler quilt and Svana quilt slide show on Gudrun's video below⤵️, starting at 21:06. It lasts for about 2 1/2 minutes and includes 72 quilts!

What a lovely quilt! A velour backing will be comfy!!
ReplyDeleteI am so attracted to GE Designs patterns. You did a beautiful job, the fabrics are gorgeous. The velour blanket backing is genius!
ReplyDeleteI find it so interesting when quilters give info about how they choose their fabrics for a quilt. I really like how you dealt with those colors. You've been busy piecing and quilting. Have a quilty week.
ReplyDeleteSvana is a beauty, Nancy! I love the coral and navy combination. It was interesting to read about your experience with using the velour blanket for a backing, too. Would you do it again? The price was sure right!
ReplyDeleteYou do such a beautiful job of piecing and of course longarming!
ReplyDeleteLovely job!! I love that panto.
ReplyDeleteDid you add batting to the quilt? Since I'm in Florida, if I put Minky or a similar fabric on the back, I don't add batting. Sometimes it just gets too heavy. Just wondered what you do...
ReplyDeleteI used the lightest weight cotton batting--Quilters Dream Request.
DeleteThis is a really pretty quilt!
ReplyDeleteThis is so lovely Nancy.
ReplyDeleteSeems quite a few quilters I know are into Gudrun's designs using her Stripology ruler. Svana turned out nicely, and I appreciate why you used the quilting design you did. I'm guessing you didn't use batting. No doubt those bound corners were thick to turn, with a velour blanket on the back. Good for you to be able to quilt through all the thickness! I'm guessing that would be nearly impossible on a domestic machine.
ReplyDeleteYour Svana looks wonderfully snuggly with that gorgeous backing.
ReplyDeleteA real beauty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty quilt! Love the cuddly fabric you used on the back but I think some longarmers might struggle with it. For you though, it was easy! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Beautiful !
ReplyDeleteAnna
Oh, what a fun experiment for the quilt backing. It's a beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteAnother Winner!! I like all the color play in this one!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely another big winner!!! The fabrics against the dark background just sing and that quilting design is pure perfection!--TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing. I can't believe you are keeping up with the QAL. Skating is a great Pantograph for something requiring more open quilting. It doesn't feel open the way cross hatching might.
ReplyDeleteI love that the pantograph is called "skating". I can see it! The quilt is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteEverything is pretty, the pattern, the fabric choice, the quilting, the backing, what a wonderful quilt! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOooh that will be so soft and cuddly. You are much braver than I using velour for the backing! I don't even want to try minkee, but others do and have no issues with it. Guess I'm just a chicken at heart! LOL This is a gorgeous quilt. I love the Skating motif you used with it as well. Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous. I love the color combination. I can't believe you used a thick blanket as a backing - I don't think my machine would handle it well and the rolling would be impossible!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful quilt. Blue and coral really looks good together!
ReplyDeleteI really like this one, especially the way you have used the fabrics.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a great pantograph, too. Lovely results.
