More 99 Charms

I have three 99 Charms baby quilt to share with you today--two are about Japan and one is about Minnesota!
My Quilt Info #1:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 80/20
Thread: Glide--Cream
Pantograph: Ground Cover ⤵️ from Urban Elementz
"Ground Cover" seemed like a good choice for quilting this outdoorsy baby quilt!
These charms squares are from a long-ago Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop. I must've thought I needed a lot of them, because although I've used some here and there, I still had a lot left!
The idea came to mind to cut all the rest into 5" squares and pair them with scrappy green charm squares for an outdoorsy quilt.

The motifs include a Lady Slipper--the Minnesota state flower, a Loon--the Minnesota state bird, a chair with fishing tackle--for our 10,000+ lakes, pinecones, pine trees and water lilies.
I filled in where needed with a few IKEA motifs. ⤴️ And here's an IKEA duvet cover for backing that I've used before. ⤵️
My Quilt Info #2:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton Request
Thread: Glide--Chestnut
Pantograph: Marquee ⤵️ from Urban Elementz
I quilted this one with "Marquee", which is similar to a sashiko design.
This quilt is all about the different Japanese prints, so humor me with these close-ups!
Most of these fabrics were bought in Japan. It's interesting that the brighter prints mixed in tend to be American prints, like the "koi" goldfish prints, above (purple) ⤴️ and  below (bright blue)! ⤵️
For binding I used a print that is a Japanese version of a Baptist fan design, called "waves" or "fans" in Japanese.
This backing is part of a duvet cover from IKEA. I think it is glorious! And the colors go so well with the Japanese prints!
I will be gifting this to a young friend, a MK (missionary kid) who grew up in Japan and lives there again, who is expecting her first baby!
My Quilt Info #3:
Pattern: 99 Charms
Size: 41" x 50"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton Request
Thread: Glide--Chestnut
Pantograph: Blowing Pampas Grass ⤵️
This quilt looks very similar to the last one. The difference is in the quilting, "Blowing Pampas Grass" which also looks like a Japanese "sashiko" design. I love using this on Japanese quilts!

I hadn't used this quilting design for quite a while, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to line up! Patterns like this, that touch the row above, can be fickle and can end up with a gap between rows. But not this one! It was designed very well and was very easy to work with.
For binding I used my favorite Japanese "waves" print--a great substitute for a striped binding! ⤴️⤵️
I used the same IKEA duvet cover for the backing as the last quilt. I have enough of this for 1 or 2 more baby quilts, as well.
If you're new around here, these quilts are called "99 Charms" because they're made from 5" charm squares, 9 columns across and 11 rows down = 99 Charms!
Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  2. Nancy, those quilts are all gorgeous! I really like the Japanese fabric and that Ikea backing is perfect! We still don't have an Ikea in NM (not large enough population here for Ikea, which is fine by me). I have never even been to an Ikea. Closesest Ikea is either AZ or CO, too far to go unless I am in the area already. My son loves Japan and has been many times. He lives in Taiwan, so not too long to get there.

  3. What a great idea to use the Minnesota symbol blocks in a 99 charms quilt and paired with the green charms is perfect. I could see this as a table runner design also. Japanese fabrics really are exquisite, how is your supply holding out?

  4. Your 99 Charms quilts are always so fun to look at, no matter what kinds of fabrics and prints you use! And you find the perfect quilting designs for them, too. And I Spy your monarch butterfly! They must be migrating right now, since we also saw them in Michigan.

  5. I never tire of looking at your quilts, especially the charms ones. They are so lively, and I want to look at each piece of fabric! I am particularly fond of that Marquee quilting - it really does resemble sashiko. You are right - the IKEA backing IS glorious. I am saving photos of the adorable MN quilt - it is my favorite! I need to make a baby quilt for great-grand nephew coming in December, and the theme is forest creatures with green, brown, tan, gold for colors. I love the way you used a print with light background with darker prints.

  6. I love looking at all the different 99 charms quilts that you make - and this time the Minnesota one really caught my eye! My husband and I honeymooned there 44 years ago, near what was then the White Earth Indian Reservation (Strawberry Lake area?). Waking up to the sound of the loons.... such special memories!

  7. I always enjoy admiring not only your beautiful quilting, Nancy but the gorgeous fabrics that you use when creating your charm quilts. How wonderful to use the charms from the Minnesota Shop Hop. I wondered if you had fussy cut those adorable squares- so lovely. Have a blessed week. Hugs.

  9. I so enjoy your 99 Charms quilts, Nancy! So many fun fabric squares used. All three are so pretty, but the Minnesota one caught my eye. Love the nature motifs. The backings used are perfect for these quilts. I'm sure the baby as well as the mother will love the quilt.

  11. These 99 charms are always a delight.
I like the way the first one has come together with different fabric combinations to fill it out.
And you always seem to find the best in IKEA for your backings. They always work so well.

  12. Three more beautiful charm quilts! You were very creative in combining other squares with the Minnesota charms to get a complete top. As always, I love the Japanese fabrics also. The waves print makes a fun binding.

  14. I do love your 99 charm quilts, and always love seeing the Japanese fabrics. It really is amazing all the different designs in each quilt. The charm quilt from the hop is great, too. Of course, the backings and quilt patterns are delightful....and make each of the quilts even more special!

  15. And I forgot to say in the prior comment, thanks for linking up to TGIFF and I don't know why I signed in a different way, too....

  16. The MN quilt was such a fun idea! All three quilts look great!

  17. My fave is the first quilt...I can't help myself, living in the mountains like I do. Having said that, however, I really admire your ability (abandonment) to go really scrappy. I know that you do set rules for yourself...theme, color, etc..., but you still keep it incredibly scrappy! Cool! 😁

  18. I forgot to say...you make me wish I could visit an Ikea. Like Daryl, there are no Ikeas near me, and I have never been to one. Maybe that's a good thing. Ha, ha!

  20. I worry sometimes that my recipients will get tired of charm square quilts; that's all I had time to do for so long. Yours are so beautiful, I would never get tired of them, so perhaps I'm being silly thinking anyone would tire of mine.

  21. Always fun to see what you are up to, Nancy. The pairing of the green with the Minnesota charm pack is excellent. Amazing how many duvet covers you find with just the right theme for the job.

  22. Very fun baby charm quilts. The outdoorsy one is really cute. The quilting on all of them looks great. Happy stitching this week.

  23. I love seeing your 99 charms quilts. You did a great job on all of them but I really like how well your Minnesota designs blended into a great out door quilt. Your Japanese fabric ones are beautiful. I actually did some online hunting on Ikea's website to see about duvet covers. At this point nothing has come of it. But one day we'll be up in the area of the store and check it out. Have you got more charm squares hanging around?

    1. I've used up the original stacks of scrap charm squares. But there is always more charm squares to be made from scraps. I love to quote Melva, "To make a quilt is to make scraps." So true!!!

  27. I love looking at your beautiful Japanese fabrics, and these two quilts are a real treat! Love the Minnesota one too, it's a great and fun way to use these symbols! Well done with the sashiko style quilting! Thank you so much for sharing your inspiring work and linking up.

  28. Lovely quilts- all! Charm squares are simple but so effective to combine. I sometimes see quilters who find lovely wide backings in Ikea linens. I've yet to go to an Ikea store. The closest one is a couple of hours away, and it just hasn't happened. But I will look online, though I see an earlier commenter didn't find much that way. Beautiful work!

  29. I love your new 99 charm design with the green and pictures alterating in a checkerboard style. So different! And don't tell me I read your comment right: You have managed to run out of your stack of precut 5" squares? xo
