Scrappy Plus Blocks ๐Ÿ’œ

I recently watched "Stitch With Rachel" on YouTube, who has an adorable leaders and enders project that she's been working on for a year, making hundreds of mini "Plus" blocks from 1 1/2" strips! I happen to have a lot of 1 1/2" scrap strips and love "Plus" blocks, so I decided to make a few myself!
Twenty-one to be exact. I'm making them as part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, starting this month with purple.

They don't take much fabric. I'm going to need another strategy to use up my 1 1/2" strips. But I'm going to make these, too, because they're so cute!!! They finish at 3".

Here's one of the original videos with Rachel making these blocks: "Scrappy Plus Blocks Tutorial".
And here is a recent update on her blocks: "Leaders and Enders Progress Update".

After making a few blocks, I modified the block to eliminate 2 of the seams. The top two blocks below are made the way Rachel made all of hers. The bottom 2 blocks below are the blocks where I eliminated two of the seams.
My Rainbow Scrappy Plus Blocks count:

  1. I love those little pluses in purple! Plus or cross quilts have always attracted me. Hmmm I might have to change my mind on the pattern for the baby quilt - lol!

  2. Oh, and I think your variation would work for me, because it eliminates a tiny piece, and I don't enjoy working with tiny pieces. :D

  3. I see a new baby quilt trend for you! I often wonder why all people don't do it your wayto eliminate , I did after the first one.

  4. Those are fun little blocks, Nancy! I haven't watched her videos, so I will go check them out. Eliminating those two seams sounds like a good idea. I always have little bits of background fabric left over, so these blocks could use those up, too!

  5. Oh, those little blocks aren't just adding up, they're multiplying! I enjoy Rachel's videos and I'll have to take a look. Have a good weekend, Nancy!

  6. Great job on those little pluses! I love that you modified the block. It is hard to make 1 1/2" strips get used up fast....but that pattern I just did...on states....has a 1 1/2" strip set option....just saying.

  7. I totally would make them with the full center as you did. It's easier & looks nicer. And yes, it's amazing how slowly 1 1/2" strips get used up, but these are certainly a cute way to do it.

  8. They certainly look pretty little blocks, but a bit small and fiddly to make with my fat fingers. Good on you, they look great.

  9. Oh my those are small blocks. I am speaking strongly to myself -- Don't start those cute little blocks! I need to use bigger pieces of fabrics! Hope you have fun with them.

  11. The plus blocks are great, but I agree, They will not use up a lot of your fabric. Your alteration to the pattern makes a lot of sense. Good luck coming up with another project for the rest of the scraps.

  12. Love the look of Rachels quilt, with all those tiny blocks! You have a ways to go to get to that size, but knowing it's going to be soooo cute will be a great motivator. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

  13. Mini Plus blocks will make an awesome quilt one day. No hurry, just whittle away at the 1.5" strings!

  14. Love this, Nancy! Thanks for sharing! I love Plus quilts but have never made one. This little guy is so cute and a great scrap buster...maybe even a Rainbow Scrap challenge project! I appreciate the videos, too...I had never heard of Rachel. And yes, I also would have eliminated unnecessary seams. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. Love your purple RSC plus blocks. I must say I like your way better. Anytime I can eliminate a seam it's a good thing IMHO!! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.

  17. What lovely little (tiny?) blocks! I am sure they will make awesome babyquilts. And glad it will help you use up 1.5inch scrap things. I will have to try one or two (soonish) to see if I like that size. But even sized up a bit, it might work well for a scrap project. Even with my current scrap situation. And I love plus blocks. Hmmm... the longer I think... maybe I should join you next year with RSC. I think I have been saying that for years and this block feels right. xo
