What To Do With ½ Yard of Fabric...

My small group is doing "secret pals" this year. We drew names and are giving our secret pal a different small gift every month at our meeting. We're doing this anonymously by putting the gifts in brown lunch bags. This month I received a half yard of Alison Glass fabric in my favorite color, fuchsia:

To me, fuchsia is warm, feminine, colorful, vivid and friendly. Next, what to do with a half of a yard...

I started out by quilting it with some Annie's Soft and Stable:
I shrunk my figure 8 pantograph down and quilted these small figure 8's (Rose, that would be wishbones to you!) across the yardage:

Next, what to do with my beautiful quilted fabric... I've been wanting to make another The Essential Tote, by Around the Bobbin, in quilted fabric. I found my pattern and fortunately there was just enough fabric to make one!

The inside has a lot of handy pockets to stay organized:

The zipper is so easy to install in this pattern and gives the extra security we all want. I love the cute tab on the end of the zipper, too! A little Tula Pink fabric on the inside:

I recently bought some "pleather" at a sale at our local fabric warehouse, SR Harris. I love how this rosey brown colored "pleather" looks with the fuchsia:

You can see my first "The Essential Tote" hereThis is a great handbag pattern in regular fabric, and an even better bag in quilted fabric! I'm really loving the fabric from my secret pal!

  1. This is so beautiful, Nancy! I think you were right to keep this as a whole piece of fabric to make the bag instead of adding it into a quilt.

  3. I wish you could have seen my face while I was reading your post at the beginning when you talked about the "figure 8" quilting and I said it's "Wishbone" and lo and behold there's a little shoutout for me. I guiltily chucked. I love both of your bags and how gorgeous it is with the pleather. But zippers, oooh, that's something I don't want to tackle. But I do have some fabrics which would look good for the bags so now I'll have to file this in my head now.

  7. Thanks for the intro to the Essential Tote pattern. I have made several bags and have always wanted to add a zipper to the top, but couldn't figure out just how to do it. Now I will have expert instructions.

  12. This is stunning. It's a great use of a 1/2 yard of fabric. The pleather sets the fabric off just nicely. I like the top of the bag as well.

  15. That tote is gorgeous!!! Great idea to use up that half yard. No matter how long I've left those little pieces on the shelf, they don't get bigger or multiply.

  16. I LOVE it! It looks fantastic, that gorgeous fuchsia and the pleather bottom. Did you have to quilt it or was that just your preference?

  21. This is fabulous, and yeah, looks awesome with the pleather! I may have to investigate that...trouble with being the host of these DrEAMi! parties is I ALWAYS find more squirrels to chase! Love all the pockets you put in, and the splash of Tula gave me a smile! Thanks for linking up!
