☀️Sunshine On a ☁️ Cloudy Day Quilt

Here's my latest quarantine finish! And it has a story!

I hang a quilt on our front door and change them with the seasons. My "Spring" door quilt is currently locked up at our guild's quilt show! Here is a reminder of that quilt:

The quilt show was to run from March 10th to April 3rd at our county museum. But after the second week the museum was shut down, along with all government buildings in Minnesota. Our quilts are locked up there until the quarantine is over, 130 quilts in all. I have 16 quilts in the show, including my Spring door quilt! In the meantime I needed another Spring door quilt, and thus I made this "Sunshine On a Cloudy Day" quilt!

Quilt Info:
Size: 24" X 24"
Thread: Superior Metallics--Antique Silver, Glide 60--Cream in bobbin
Batting: Quilters Dream Poly
Quilting: 1/4" Matchstick quilting--freemotion quilting
Interesting Info: Subscribe to the Primrose Cottage Quilts newsletter and you'll receive a free pattern at the beginning of every month. This pattern came with the February newsletter. The patterns are usually fun mini quilts or table runners, and after the newsletter goes out, the pattern goes up for sale in Lindsey's Etsy shop.

A photo of my flimsy follows. Lest you think it was all fun and games, I originally had a different fabric in the star points, but they were blending into the rest of the quilt, looking mushy. I ripped most of it apart and made it with these new star points that work much better:

I typically press to the dark side, but in this case there were so many seams coming together that I pressed many of them open:

I recently watched a video on attaching binding to the front of a quilt while on the longarm. This is my second time to try it, and I'd say it's getting easier:

I love using Superior Metallics thread, especially on minis! I used Antique Silver Metallics thread here and Glide 60 in the bobbin, and didn't even have to adjust the tension:

The backing is this clamshell print from Japan that looks like a sunrise!!!

And we have a Spring quilt on our front door now!!! Along with that Spring wreath I made last week. Just in time for the daffodils to bloom this week!

Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

  2. Love it! I just did the matchstick quilting and it was so fast on the longarm!!!!! I love that you had the perfect source for a new quilt (even though you have a perfectly good quilt for the door just can't get to it). I think I'll sign up because good patterns always come in handy!

  8. Great story for a great quilt. The colors aren't what I normally would think of as spring but you've done such a great job of pulling colors. It sure says spring to me in this quilt.

  9. Adorable! I usually put wreaths on my front door, but I am thinking a quilt could work, thankfully it doesn't get full sun to fade it.

  11. Beautiful. That is a lovely choice of design and colour. Perfect for Spring.
I had never thought of displays being locked up when this started. But of course it makes sense. Once the building is locked up, the quilts must stay there.

  12. This is such a pretty, cheerful finish, Nancy! Thanks for sharing your thread combination. I bought a couple cones of Superior Metallic at a show last Spring that I haven’t tried yet. I don’t have any Glide 60 for the bobbin, but maybe regular Glide or Bottom Line would work in the bobbin? Congrats on your beautiful finish!

  19. Nancy, your spring door quilt looks lovely! Such a cheery greeting for all those people who won’t be coming to visit, lol. Just kidding! It will give cheery thoughts and good vibes to anyone passing by, which is much needed and appreciated right now. The quilting looks great! Stay safe!

  20. Another lovely mini! I haven’t tried metallic threads on my longarm yet, but I have used them for years on my Bernina and love them. Sarah (Confessions) usually sews her binding on on the longarm. I need to try that... The quilt really pops off your black door. :-) Thanks for linking this up with DrEAMi!

  23. The sparkle of the metallic thread is a great touch. I really like grey and yellow together as a color palette. What a lovely quilt to enjoy on your door!
