Get On Board 🏄🏽 With Sewing

Yokoso! That means "Welcome" in Japanese!!! Welcome to my stop on the "Get On Board With Sewing" blog hop!!! September is National Sewing month and "tropical"/"surf" is our theme!

Now, here's my tropical quilt!!! ⤵️ Read on for my story! Plus, read to the end of this post and leave a comment to be entered to win some fabulous quilty gifts!!!
Quilt Info:
Maker: Me!
Pattern: Sunrise in Paradise--CUTIE Collections by Elaine Church
Size: 54" x 74"
Batting: Quilters Dream 100% Cotton Request
Thread: Glide--Linen
Pantograph: Santa Rosa ⤵️ from 627Handworks
Interesting Info: While living in Japan as a missionary for 24 years, I taught English, cooking, Bible, and patchwork classes. If you've ever been to Hawaii, you know that Japanese love to vacation there as much as anyone! Occasionally, some of my students took vacations in Hawaii and brought back "omiyage"--souvenirs, and in my case, small cuts of Hawaiian fabrics. They were probably leftover bits from Hawaiian shirt fabrics, as they don't seem to be 100% cotton. But they are colorful and fun! I still had them in my collection and thought of putting these together as a quilt when I heard about this blog hop theme, tropical/surf!!!
The fabrics were of different sizes, with one group being about 5 3/4" x 7", so I cut all my fabrics 5 1/2" square, to get the largest block possible.
I used Sherpa for the backing! It's soft, cuddly and 60" wide! It calls for more open quilting, too. I used this wave design to go with the surf theme!!!
When using Sherpa on the back, I like to have a Sherpa self-binding! After quilting, simply trim batting even with the quilt top, cut the Sherpa 1 3/4" from the quilt top, turn over twice and stitch from the front. It's fast and it makes a super soft edge!!!
There are several types of palm trees in Japan. But, we live in Minnesota now and there are no live palm trees here! Still, we do have a Mediterranean Cruise Ship Restaurant nearby with some artificial palm trees!
The palm branches are lit up in the evening!!!

  4. I love those Hawaiian prints! And what a meaningful quilt they all made - will you keep it? The photo setting is magical. And I LOVE that Sherpa binding! I've never sewn with Sherpa, is the binding difficult to sew on the corners?

    1. Yes, the corners of the Sherpa binding are the thickest part, and a bit tricky. The best way to handle it is with a stiletto--hold it together with the stiletto while stitching.

  15. This quilt is fabulous and fun! I wonder if it is the same kind of material as the one my son brought to me from Hawaii...vaguely canvas like but not that stiff? I love that you paired it with the sherpa! And you know, quilts are my favorite sewing activity although I dabble in many things and started sewing garments many moons ago!

  22. Love the fabrics in your quilt which brought back memories of our 25th anniversary spent in Hawaii. Last Saturday was our 60th anniversary. After we retired we spent 4 summers in Taiwan helping churches reach out to their communities giving us opportunities for our own spiritual growth. Nancy A: SewingGranda@gmail.com
