Sayonara 2023🐰, Yōkoso 2024🐉

Farewell 2023! Welcome 2024!!! Here's a Grace and Peace Quilting review of 2023, and a preview of what's to come in 2024, the year of the dragon in Japan!
First, 2023: I quilted 135 quilts in 2023, 53 of my own, and 82 for others.

Of my own 53 quilts, here's the breakdown:

4 Queen size quilts
22 Twin/Throw quilts
4 Baby quilts
16 Wall/Mini quilts
6 Table runners
1 Bag

Overall, I have quilted a total of 1,103 quilts on my APQS longarm since it arrive in June, 2012!

Here are a few highlights from this year:

In January, I finished making all 7 of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts from 2022, and started on a new set of blocks for 2023!
In March, I super enjoyed participating in my second virtual quilt retreat, along with my sister and our quilting cousin, led by Gudrun at GE Designs!!! We made 2 throw quilts and a table center!!!
In June, our grandson arrived safely, 17 days early! I made a Fab Farm quilt for him, and this flannel receiving blanket--instruction video by Missouri Star Quilt Co.
In JulyI had fun meeting two quilt blogger friends!!! I met Kathleen of KathleenMcMusing and Wendy of PiecefulThoughts!!! We had lunch, did a little shop hopping and hung out together!!!
In September, I celebrated my 8th year of working at my local quilt shop! Our top benefit of working there is a 50% discount on a one-time purchase during our anniversary month. Here's what I bought this year!!! ⤵️ I tend to stock up on background fabrics, along with some notions, gifts and extra wide backing fabrics.
In October, our granddaughter turned 3 on our shared birthday! I made her and her cousin, who is 6 weeks older, "Wild At Heart" fabric books and minkee pillows!!!⤵️
In December, I finished my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts for 2023! The hostess, Angela @ SuperScrappy announces a color of scraps to work on each month. It's a great scrapbuster plan! I made 2 quilt tops out of the 60 blocks I made in 2023!!!⤵️
I participated in 8 quilt alongs in 2023!!! They are: Board & Batten QAL x 2, Napping House QAL, Amalie Supersized QAL, GE Class Pack 1 & 2, Strip Twist QAL x 2, Fab Farm QAL, and Koby Quickie QAL!⤵️
At the request of JELA, the mission group we worked with for 25 years, I sent some quilts and mini pillows to Japan for a fundraiser! ⤵️
Photos from the event in Tokyo, held on September 23, the Autumn Equinox, a national holiday in Japan:
While sewing this year, I listened to 175 books, via Libby and Hoopla apps, which are available for free from our local library! Plus DH reads aloud to me evenings while I'm sewing in my studio. He can read on and on for hours! I keep track of my books on Goodreads, a free website. Otherwise I'd lose track of what I've read!!! Below are some of my favorite books this year.

A Northern Lakes Mystery series by Jeff Nania--John Cabrelli is a former cop who settles in Northern Wisconsin and still finds himself solving cases. There are 4 books in the series so far.

The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin--an unimaginable tragedy with a happily ever after.

Bess Crawford series by Charles Todd--Bess is a courageous British nurse during WW1. There are 13 books in this series so far. I especially enjoyed book 4.5--The Walnut Tree

2024 is the Year of the Dragon in Japan, where everyone sends out New Years cards!!! I plan on participating in Gudrun's virtual retreat for the third year in a row. I will be doing the Rainbow Scrap Challenge again. There are a couple of SALs I hope to participate in. And I plan on making more mini quilts to send to Japan for another fundraiser!

I broke my left wrist on December 22nd, so I will be in recovery mode for a couple of months first.

  4. Nancy, it's so fun to see all that you accomplished this year! I really love seeing your RSC quilts with all their pretty and scrappy color. Thanks for the book recommendations - I just checked out the first book in the Northern Lakes series. Happy New Year - wishing you a quick recuperation so you can get back to doing all your favorite things!

  5. You created so many beauties, this year, as in years past. So great that some of your things went to Japan, and the ministry you worked with. Being in MN with you and Wendy was one of the highlights of 2023. I sure hope that wrist heals quickly and well!

  6. Wow oh wow!! You have truly been busy this year. I can't believe your production of quilts. Even if you quilted for others, that's a whole lot of threads!! I am in awe of what you accomplish. Now, for working at a quilt shop...that would be dangerous for me. Even with a once a year anniversary, I would probably buy the place out. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful array of finishes.

  11. Happy New Year! That is a wonderful run through of your quilts for the year. A very impressive number, too. What a great bonus to have with the store as well.
I am sure you will be just as productive in 2024. Good luck!

  14. What an amazing year 2023 was for you! Not sure the wrist break was a happy way to wrap up the year or start the new, but I'm hoping the recovery will be quick. Looking forward to seeing what you create in 2024!

  15. Wow, wow, wow! I'm going to live vicariously through you until I retire which is at least 10 years from now! You are my hero!

What a great perk of working at the LQS!

I too am an audiobook listener and use Goodreads to keep track. I listen at 1.75x speed. Do you listen at normal speed? I don't think Goodreads is user-friendly when it comes to finding or adding friends. Find me and friend me please. I'm Zenia Rene. I'm adding a couple of your favorite reads to my Want To Read Shelf.

After reading your post I am currently working on moving my blog from Wordpress back to Blogger. It was a pain uploading photos to my last blog post. Blogger should be easier because all my photos are in Google photos and it's Google product. Please pray for my transition.

I'm praying for a speedy recovery and complete restoration of your wrist.

    Happy New Year!

  16. Amazing list of accomplishments! Sorry to hear that you broke your left wrist. I did the same a couple of years ago on a fundraising ride for JOEE.jp and am now reinforced with titanium. Wishing you a wonderful Year of the Dragon in 2024. Thank you for your contributions to JOEE -- the teaching quilts are still being used in the orphanages in Japan. :)

  18. Wowsa! Nancy, you accomplish so much! I'm telling myself it's okay that I made only eight quilts this year because quilting on a domestic takes longer. Tell me that's why I'm slow. You quilt so much more than I do! And you've made so many great things! Just wonderful. And that you have a 50 percent off day at the shop where you work is a huge bonus! The most I ever received as a quilt shop employee was 20 percent off. It's great knowing you can listen to so many books too! Wowsa again! "The Mountain Between Us" was excellent! I couldn't bring myself to watch the movie because there was a trailer where she fell through the ice... and that didn't happen in the book. Decided right then that the movie couldn't be as good as the book! Though my library I use the Boundless app, and Hoopla, the latter of which I'm limited to five check-outs a month. Sometimes I just can't find the books I want to listen to. I'm still feeling sorry about your broken wrist, and hope that the cast is now the right size, and your status is only a matter of being inconvenienced. Have a happy 2024, my friend!

  20. Wow what a year of accomplishments! So sorry to hear about your wrist, but it's probably a signal that you need to rest after doing so much. Hopefully you will be back up and running again soon and making more beautiful quilts! I hope you had a lovely New Year! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss. https://www.inquiringquilter.com/questions/2024/01/03/wednesday-wait-loss-361

I hope your wrist heals quickly!

  22. Happy New Year Nancy!! This list is jaw dropping. I don't think I could accomplish this much if I sewed 24/7. You are one productive quilter/sewist!! Love to read about what you make and also what you finished for others. You certainly give your long arm a work out.
Very sorry to hear about the broken arm though. I hope it heals quickly so you are back to your routine.

  25. Wow, Nancy, so many cool quilts - and books! Apparently it is the "new" thing to do while quilting. I am still behind... but I have started with some podcasts on slow quilting days. Ohterwise I still prefer to keep it to one thing at a time ;) I enjoyed your recap and especially the two rainbow projects. Though I had to decide agains it for 2024. But I am sure it will still be a thing in 2025... All the best for your 2024. I hope you and your husband have a wonderful and healthy year! xo

  30. Oh my goodness, you are a quilting workhorse, Nancy. So, so many beautiful quilts and pretties you worked in last year. How lovely your husband reads to you while you stitch. It does sound rather relaxing. Take care with your wrist. Hope it heals with each new day. A wonderful new year to you, dear Nancy. May it be filled with much joy and beautiful quilting.

  31. Hi Nancy! What an amazing year you've had. Fifty-three quilts finished is just amazing. I am so sorry about your wrist. An enforced break from all things sewing and quilting may reveal a silver lining in the future. Who knows what the next few months will hold before you can get back to your love and talent. I am impressed with your book total as well, and am going to check out Jeff Nania. Thanks so much for the recommendation! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

  32. You got to meet both Kathleen and Wendy!!! I am so jealous. I met Kathleen in Austin in 2020, just before Covid. She is aging backwards :-) And your t-shirt is a nod to Kaffe. Also makes me jealous :-) Take care of you. You are so prolific, I hope you make time for some self-care. Happy sewing.

  34. OUCH! for the broken wrist! Gonna be hard to load customer quilts with a broken wrist. That is a LOT of quilts that you've quilted! I've done virtual sew-in's (one day) but not a virtual retreat before. Sounds like fun! Take it easy on that wrist.

  35. Wow, what a great year you had and awesome recap! You've been busy. I'm so sorry to hear about your broken wrist! Take good care of yourself and stay warm. Cold is not kind to broken bones and arthritic joints like mine!! Thanks for sharing on Monday Musings!
